Back in the Day

We use to stretch ourselves
To the future and beyond
Now we never see
The forest for the tree

Our petty differences blind us to the sight
Of the stars that come out at night
And the promise of our past
Of that one small step for man

We don't do it because it is easy
One man was to say
We do it because it is hard
As his life was taken away

A giant leap for mankind is what we need to do
How can that promise of the future
Be dimmed by the problems of today
Please don't take our hopes away

Mankind has ever explored
To strive for the next challenge
A spark in us to see what's next
To always want to be out best

We've arrived at a time in history
A choice we have to make for all
To stand on the shoulders of giants
Or to wallow in the mire of tyrants

Let us take the reigns of man
And move toward the future
The bright light that shines in all of us
To not will be the death of us

Really nice writing, and there's so much truth in this it's pathetic. But as tragically truthful as this starts out, you did a great job of making it encouraging in the end. Really nice
