    Come on Noor, make love not war is surely romantic. Besides, I need romantic dreams in order to get in the mood to write romantic poetry - and they've been in short supply of late.

    Moon,

    It's just something I doodled on the theme of collective animal nouns - it actually follows the rhythm and rhyming pattern of Cohen's "Closing Time" (always a favourite), apart from the repetitions.

    Think of it as a challenge Ola. Working muse-less.

    I want you to know I took an "authorized break" from work just to respond to this...

    I'll go two better and name 5:

    1. Talking on the phone with gf.

    2. Email <> gf.

    3. Riding in my car and listening to music with gf.

    4. Taking long walks with gf.

    5. Taking unauthorized breaks from work to do innumerable other things with or otherwise relating to gf.

    So there ya go: Phone, email, car, walks, and goofing off. Just for starters.

    Love Life. It's the only thing you've got.

    Romance

    I win hands down. Nothing in life would be flavoured without love. Try doing the above excluding the gf and tell me it tastes the same.

    Oh I'll show you.

    1. Eating durian.
    2. Sitting on a beach eating durian.
    3. Swimming and eating durian.
    4. Skydiving and eating durian.
    5. Flying to Mars with a good supply of durian (to plant durian trees on Mars).

    There. Simples.

    Sounds like a romance between you and durian(s)
    Even after all this time

    Look what happens with a love like that
    It lights the whole sky

    There once was a gal from Durian
    who wished to be known as Lady Ann
    she pierced my heart
    (that gave me a start!)
    - I fell for her as only an ape can!

    You really can't win guys. I'd like to subtly remind you of Arab dictatorial traits.

    But see, Ola, that wasn't so hard. We might even get another sonnet out of you.

    I should pen a Shakespearean one, I've only done a Petrarchan so far. They're not that hard to do but my thoughts have been elsewhere of late.

    Without gf it not only doesn't taste the same (or at all), it's not even on the menu.

    What a concept
    And it sounds definitely worth a read.

    It's honestly one of the best books I've read, ever. Bar none. I'm now reading his latest and it's brilliant as well - really presents a nuanced picture way beyond the stereotypes we tend to operate with. Got to love the guy - I'd give him a Nobel peace prize if it was up to me.

    Default Four Hundred Parts

    Well I did pen a Shakespearean sonnet. Not a romantic one, my apologies - my thoughts are elsewhere.

    The skies above lay in a mid-day haze,
    a lone cuckoo the tell-tale sign of May.
    No clouds did meet my skyward-pointed gaze,
    vast emptiness alone to tell the tale
    from Swartkrans to the Tranquil Sea above,
    from cold and hunger to security;
    as fragile as a newly hatched dove,
    as real as infinite pecunity.
    Whither now? We've played four hundred parts
    and many more, no doubt, are yet to come;
    will donkeys riding on driverless carts
    be all our epitaph will say we'd done?
    I see a scarlet glow embrace the day;
    of dusk or dawn? Or both? I cannot say.

    *

    I paint your name across the sky
    with the stardust
    your kiss left in my heart:
    will you see it?

    Will you come?

    I squeeze eternity in my arms
    where you should be
    where the shadows of my longing
    have grown longer than life
    so far away from you,
    so far away from you.

    What cannot be
    can not be
    yet this you will not take from me
    - this longing for you that could not be met,
    the words I hid that - never! - could be said;
    the warmth of dreaming what could have been true
    if heavens had been merciful and let me whisper those three words to you.

    In my outstretched hand -
    dust, only dust
    from the desert God forbade to cross
    me to you,
    you to me;

    in my ever outstretched hand -
    dust, ever only dust.

    Today,
    I plan to cry;
    cry for the pain of life,
    cry for the pain of death,
    cry for those who had that greatest boon of all,
    cry for those who had it not, and, born to fall,
    loved, hated, suffered, cried, drowned and sank.

    I will cry for you, whose eyes are dry,
    I will cry for being one of those still walking 'neath this leaden sky,
    for you who are no more but whom I knew:
    I cry for what I lost -
    I cry for you.

    When life stops, existence remains in the memories of those who loved.

    I love you, you know
    though I haven't said
    so -
    but that is the truth, so
    please, let me die
    before we get close
    before all the pain
    that is born from the thorn
    that grows in the hearts
    of those who love
    rips us apart;

    before what could be
    turns to what has been
    before the unseen
    between you and me
    is known and named,
    marred and maimed.

    This is the perfect love;
    I want to die before it.
