Hello, everyone!

I visited the elderly mother of a dear friend recently who spent hours sharing stories from her life with us. She was decorating for Christmas and asked us for help getting some boxes down from her closet; we happily obliged. As she rummaged through the box, she pulled out a Santa with his arm around a girl holding a doll which reminded her of a song her mother sang to her. She delighted us by breaking into a song about a little girl selling her dolly to buy bread for her sick mother. The song, what she could remember of it, was sad. I would love to find the lyrics for my friend as this was the first time he could ever remember her singing.

The jist of what I remember:

A little girl is selling her dolly for bread.....her mother is sick....she is asking the man to whom she is she is selling her doll to be good to her doll, as she is a very good doll....

The mother is 85 years old, so the song has a good chance of being 100 years old. Any ideas?

Thank you for any leads!
