    Default Scottish-Gaelic (G└IDHLIG) - Julie Fowlis: "Sme˛rach Clann D˛mhnaill"

    Hello people,

    I realised that no correct lyrics for Sme˛rach Clann D˛mhnaill exist, particulary sung by Julie Fowlis.
    Here are lyrics that I could gather together from very old books and other parts of the internet:

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    Sme˛rach mis' air ¨rlar Phaibbil,
    Cr¨badh ann an d¨sal cadail,
    Gun de˛rachd a thŔid nas fhaide,
    Truimid mo bhr˛n, thoirleum m' aigne.

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    Sme˛rach mis' air mullach beinne,
    Gaibhric grein as speirin soilleir,
    Thig mi stolda choir na ceille,
    Bidh mi be˛ air tre˛das eille.

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    Ma mholas gach eun a thýr fŔin,
    C'uim' thar Úis nach moladh mise?
    Týr nan curaidh, týr nan cliar,
    An týr bhiadhchar, fhialaidh, mheasail.

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    'n týr nach caol ri cois na mara,
    An týr ghaolach, chaomhach, channach,
    An týr laoghach, uanach, mheannach,
    Týr an arain, bhainneach, mhealach.

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    An cloigh chothan mise ruga [?],
    An aird an h-unnair h-uair mi togail,
    Fraoirc [?] a chuain uaibhreach chuislich (chaislich?),
    Nan stuaigh guanich, cluainich, cluichich [???],

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    Measg chlann D˛mhnaill fhuair mi m' altram,
    Buidheann nan se˛l 's nan sr˛l dathte,
    Nan long luath air chuantaibh farsaing,
    Aiteam nach ci¨in r¨sgadh ghlas-lann.

    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ ro ý,
    Hoilibheag, hilibheag, h˛ aill ill ˛;
    Sme˛rach le clann D˛mhnaill mi.

    I found lyrics by Rachel Walker with a translation. Maybe this will help.

    Lyrics: English Translation:
    SŔist: Chorus (after each verse):
    Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ ail il ˇ Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ ail il ˇ
    Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ rˇ i Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ rˇ i
    Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ ail il ˇ Hoilibheag hilibheag hˇ ail il ˇ
    Sme˛rach le Clann D˛mhnaill mi A mavis of Clan Donald I
    Sme˛rach mis' air ¨rlar Phaibil A mavis I on Paible's flatlands
    Cr¨badh ann an d¨sal cadail Crouched in a drowsy sleep
    Gun de˛rachd a thÚid nas fhaide Without misery that can go further without exile
    Truimid mo bhr˛in th˛irleum m' aigne My sorrow heavier, my spirits fallen
    Sme˛rach mis' air mullach beinne A mavis I on a mountaintop
    'G amharc grÚin is speuran soillear Watching the sun and the clear sky
    ThÚid mi st˛lda ch˛ir na coille I will approach the forest quietly
    Bidh mi be˛ air tre˛tas eile I shall live by other means
    Ma mholas gach eun a thýr fÚin If every other bird praises its own land
    Cuim' thar Úis nach moladh mise? Why then should not I?
    Týr nan curaidh, týr nan cliar Land of heroes, land of poets
    An týr bhiadhchar fhialaidh mhiosail The hospitable, generous land of plenty
    Measg Chlann D˛mhnaill fhuair mi m' altrum Among Clan Donald I was nursed
    Buidheann nan se˛l 's nan sr˛l daithte Company of sails and colored banners
    Nan long luath air chuantan farsaing Of swift ships on wide oceans
    Aiteam nach ci¨in r¨sgadh ghlas lann A people not slow to bare the gray blades
    Na fir e˛lach st˛lda stÓideil Men experienced, steady, stately
    Bha 's a' ch˛mhstri str˛iceach scaiteach Haughty and keen in battle
    Fir gun bhr˛n gun le˛n gun airtneul Men without sorrow, without wounds, without weariness
    Leanadh t˛ir, is t˛ir a chaisgeadh Who would follow in the rout and who could also stop one
    Buidheann mo ghaoil nach caoin caitean My beloved company, not smooth of temper
    Buidheann nach gann greann san aisith A company resolute in war
    Buidheann shanntach 'n Óm bhith aca A company ambitious when it was necessary
    R¨sgadh lann fo shranntraich bhratach To bare their blades beneath fluttering banners
    (SŔist 2x) (Chorus 2x)
    Gott zur Ehr, dem nńchsten zur Wehr

    What if they gave a fire and nobody came.

    You will never find that life for which you are looking.

    but life they retained in their own keeping"
