    Default ρεμπέτικα, λαϊκά.

Όταν αγωνιζόμαστε στη ζωή για να κάνει τα προς το ζην, χρειαζόμαστε ρεμπέτικα.
Όταν είμαστε στην αγάπη, χρειαζόμαστε λαϊκά.

Do you need a translation cause these phrases are not in proper Greek.... ???
"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"

    Yes, please!!! Thank you.

These were understood by Greeks on Facebook pretty well - even Duffy made no correction.

And therefore, I thought they were correct Greek for the English:

"When we struggle in life to make a living, we need rebetika . . . when we are in love, we need laika."

But apparently, I was too optimistic about my Greek ... LOL ... so I would be grateful for any correction from you.

Here is Duffy's correction ... perhaps you will translate the same way:

Όταν αγωνιζόμαστε στη ζωή για τα προς το ζην, χρειαζόμαστε τα ρεμπέτικα.
Όταν είμαστε ερωτευμένοι, χρειαζόμαστε τα λαϊκά

I am glad that you approve of the correction by Duffy.

But as usual ... LOL . . .Duffy disagrees with my generalization here. He says that the best laika composers in Greece wrote of "life issues" as well as "love".

And of course, this is true. But! I still think my generalization does capture something about the difference between laika and rebetika ...
