Default Old Greek songs -- Two questions

    Hi again Greek music lovers,

I have two rather difficult questions, so I need your experties. I presume they are difficult because me and a couple of Greek friends have vague ideas about the issue (in fact, I have no idea) .

We need to surprise the father of a Greek friend of mine. He is in his early seventies, a very good guitar player, and particularly eclectic in his music taste. We thought about compiling a CD with the songs of his time. Now, if he's 70, he must have had his young music experiences around the 50 and 60s. As a person he is quite conservative. So, my first question: Can you suggest artists and song lists for him and ideas of where to find them (I would imagine that these oldies might be more difficult to get than more recent music).

The second question. Not really related 100% to Greek music, but I am sure the experts here might know something more. The father also had an extensive collection of disks in his old house in Greece . He claims that some of the pieces he owns are very rare Greek music. Unfortunately, due to a breakin most of the collection was thrown all over the floor at his old house, badly scratched and exposed to dust and other dirt. He collected the disks and he contacted a couple of shops in Greece that said that the disks were really not usable any more. They suggested various liquid solutions that could be applied on the surface of the disks, but my friend's father dismissed them as dangerous. Needless to say, he is very sad about it. A follow up on a studio here in London gave me an email that mentioned that restoration via digital means is possible on a studio that contains "OCDR technology certified equipment". Tried to follow up by asking what that is and have not received a response. So I would be grateful if someone can decode that acronym for me and tell me possibly where I could find an OCDR studio in Athens?

Thanks a lot for any pointers. I would appreciate #any# pointers!

    Default Hi Maria

I have no idea. As I said, his daughter describes him as conservative, so maybe 50's and 60's rock and roll might not be his style. Only a guess.

    Thanks for replying.

Maybe Olympians, Paschalis Arvanitidis, Vasilis Papakonstantinou. But if he wants traditional greek music I suggest these singers: Mikis Theodorakis's songs, Stavros Xarhakos's songs, Manos Hatzidakis's songs, Stratos Dionisiou, Stelios Kazatzidis, Polly Panou, Sotiria Bellou, Dionisis Savopoulos. There are some modern singers who are also good. Manolis Mitsias, Haris Alexiou, Glykeria, Giorgos Dalaras, Paschalis Terzis, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Yannis Kotsiras, Dimitris Mitropanos, Tolis Voskopoulos. I cannot remember other singers. i don't know if i helped you, but I can do only this.

Thanks ever so much Azimut! You consistently justify your seniority here!

About issue no 1. Acknowledged. I guess it would be easy for you to name a few names of artists, just in case I could ask around folks in an attempt to fish stuff.

In relation to issue no 2. Many thanks again. Any more info will be greatly appreciated.

Default Well, well, well!Looking for the oldies, eg?

    Καλησπέρα,

Issue no.1 : Your queries are very interesting. I see that maria_gr has suggested amongst others "The Olympians", "Pasxalis", Kazantzidis etc...Sure, they are oldies and very popular oldies. However, your friend's father is likely to go further back in time. I have four names of artists for you. The reason I chose them is that you mention something about him playing the guitar and being conservative. In my perception, a 70 year old person that plays the guitar and is quite conservative MUST HAVE BEEN LISTENING to folks like Toni Maroudas (Tόνυ Μαρούδας), Nick Gounaris (Νίκος Γούναρης) and Fotis Polymeris (Φώτης Πολυμέρης). They fit the profile of conservative, retro artists that liked the guitar and used to gather around the "Plaka" area in Athens, a quite famous place for artists gatherings and still nice-ish today. Fish also for the "Katsamba brothers" (αδερφοί Κατσάμπα), very skilled singers and guitar players of the time, with Cinematographic participation (as Azimut suggested) that are actually from my home city!!! You know, I could be wayyyyy off in my suggestion, but I bet that at least one of these names is going to make him very excited and must be in his original collection. I would be willing to bet money on that.

Issue no.2: Talking about old discs here are some answers:
1)OCDR stands for Over-sampling and Comparison Digital Restoration. It is an entire range of procedures where sound is recorded from special turntables or tape players, gets digitized and all the "scratch and rumble" phenomena are extracted by means of special computer software to make crystal clear sound that closely matches the original to the greatest possible extent.
2)An OCDR certified studio is one that contains equipment to perform not only the recording and processing, but also the treatment of the original analog media in order to maximize the effectiveness of an OCDR recording. So, a media specialist will examine the condition of a disk or tape, will judge if surface work is needed prior to the recording and will quarantee the optimal removal of dust and other substances that might interfer with the quality of sound. This is actually the most expensive step.
3)Your friend's father was right when he does not trust third party solutions. DO NOT apply anything on the media surface. There are some anti-static solutions that could prevent the depositing of dust particles, but any other chemical (aceton, chlorine, benzin) could damage them. If you decide to restore them, leave the process to a specialist and I assure you the chemicals used are not widely available in the market.
4)I have sent you details of an OCDR enabled studio in Athens in a private message. I used to work there, and they do a good job as they have been a subcontractor of the Greek Broadcasting Corporation (ΕΡΤ) archive, the largest archive of Greek music. You can safely trust them. Prices vary. As a sample, they might ask anything from 25 - 30 pounds for LPs (33 1/2, 45ers) up to 150 pounds for older 78 rpm "Shellac" gramophone records that are broken in pieces . You can ask them for a better price if you have many disks and they are usually reasonable to respond. Use my name to them as a reference .

Quarkie, I would like to tell you that you were SPOT ON! He is a fanatic of the artists you mentioned and jumped off his seat when he heard the CD we compiled!!! Also, we got in touch with the studio and after sending some samples, he now trusts them to curate his collection. He asked to pass you the following:

    "Agaphte Quarkie,

Eisai kinhth egkyklopaideia moysikhs!!! Na eisai panta kala, se eyxaristw para, para poly!!! An mporesw na sto antapodwsw kapws, eyxaristws!!!
