"that was long ago" with strong guitar melody

I heard this song in a grocery store early this morning... It's got a strong, repetitive electric guitar melody, but the acoustics of the store made it difficult to make out the (male) lyrics. I believe they had the phrase "should have known..." and "...but that was long ago." I've been googling all sorts of versions of those words in attempt to find the lyrics to no avail. Can ya'll help?? Thanks! Brandon
