I have a question about names... I have a friend whose name is (I think) Răzvan. He goes by Raz, so I assume that was his full name. When you write "Raz", does it also have a diacritic, or none? (Răz?)

Well its a nickname, which i didn't hear yet in romania...(just in nfs:P).....I am almost sure his name is "Raz" and not (Răz)..cause it sounds better
You should know that we are using diacritics just in hand-writing...

Just for the info more short names from romania:
    Alexandru-Alex-Lex
    George-Geo
    Costan-Costi
    Monica-Moni
    Marian-Mari
Alexandra-Anda(got a friend called so,but i believe its the only person whit this name :P)
    Daniel-Dani
    Emilian-Emi
    ....and many more

Mersi, Marian! Yes, I am aware of the diacritics in writing mostly, since I don't usually type with them, and usually don't see Razvan written with a diacritic, either... I figured it was just "Raz" without the ă, but just wanted to check

And I've heard Anda and Andra, although I'm not positive what they're short for...

Confused. I believe Maria is a female first name .... No ?
And Marian last name ? Are u sure?

Marion is Romanian name for sure but i don't know what kind it is.

If it's a family name then it IS last name. No ?

I agree--I've heard Marion in other languages, and for both genders, but not Romanian. Mimi is correct

    One more please:

    am o reţinere

Google translator gives me the english translation: i have a hold

Can you please give me a wider explanation of the use of am o reţinere ?

The context is: i don't have sex, am o reţinere .

Practically the meaning is: I have something that pulls me back (from doing something).

am o reţinere=something stops me "doing that/this" Figure of speaking
    [
    "i don't have sex, am o reţinere"=Something stops me from doing sex/Nu fac sex,am o retinere

Isn't used a lot...but it refers at conciseness...you say about a thing which you believe its wrong to do ....that your conciseness don't let you doing it...
Something stops me from loving you/Am o retinere in a te iubi (I believe its wrong to love you)...

Also it can be used in:
Am fost retinut la servici/I was held at the office whit some work.

    Hello,
it has been long time since I posted but I'm still around lol. Question is there a close expression that young people use today to say Babe? In the USA, you hear it all the time Hey babe, or miss you babe etc. So not sure if romanian has something similar for Babe with a sense of affection. Appreciate the help.
