the correct form is "aceasta", but you will mostly hear Ești prost și asta nu-mi place

Your sentence was not incorrect at all, yes the equivalent of ''it'' is aceasta and not acesta. ''asta'' is very used in talking but it is not a literary form and it is advisable u do not use that in any kind of formal document or speech.

I think I know why u don't use ''acesta'' .It is because Romanians do not have this ''it'' somehow cold and idependent as e fix, well established grammatical structure, impersonal. If u want to express in an impersonal manner, we only have a compound predicate formed with copulative verb ''to be'' plus an adverb, without that english ''it'':
Ex:

este bine, este greu, este uşor, este dificil, ar fi bine, ar fi fost greu, a fost greu, a fost dificil etc

Anyway, in standard language u will never hear a sentece like "Nu-mi place aceasta", sounds like hell and it is unappropriate. Grammar has structures that can be very strange from literary point of view.This is one of the cases.
U use acesta/aceasta either as subject (Aceasta este camera/prietena/cartea mea) or as pronominal adjective Această casă/cameră/ carte este frumoasă.

So, generally u use this following ellegant way to express likes and dislikes, not only with the pronoun or pronominal adjective.
Don't say
"Nu-mi place aceasta, acesta, aceea, acela and so on, but rather be specific, so use nouns, like:

Îmi place cartea/Nu-mi place mâncarea.

Îmi place cămaşa aceea.

Îmi place băiatul acela.

Nu suport această atitudine/ acest comportament/ acea replică.

In spoken language, yes right, u use what we call popular forms (used by normal, not necesarilly educated people) "asta", " aia".

Asta nu-mi place.

Aia nu suport.

Asta mă irita.

Asta nu-mi convine.

Now, I think we use the feminine and not the masculine form because when u use such senteces generally u say ''chestia'' asta, it is a feminine noun. ''chestia'' is what we use in romanian instead of ''it'':

"chestia" replaces anything, things, actions, attitudes, behaviour, anything but human beings or other beings )

someone says someth wrong u say: Chestia asta nu-mi place.
Someone brings u a present u say : Chestia asta îmi place, even if it a jewl, a book, cloth etc e
someone looks at u roughly u say: Chestia asta nu-mi place.
someone rises the finger threatening, u say: Chestia asta nu-mi place.

So "asta" is the atribute of the noun "chestia", even when u don't utter it. That is why in any sentence for any kind of circumstance u say "asta" and not "ăsta".
