Woke up in the night
To a knocking on my door
Told the man to go away
I can’t see his face anymore
I used to know him well
He was a friend of mine
He got up and took a walk
Now he’s back, and his face has lines
He has grown into a man
But he left me in his wake
He doesn’t understand
What for us to give and take
He’s a stranger now
So much stranger now
How life seems to divide
Brothers apart, heart from heart
The truth from men who lied
Fell asleep once more
To the sound of morning rain
Knocking on my door
I ignored it once again
It is him again, I said
So I watched the fireplace burn
Wondering when they would
Take me to where I can learn
Where can I learn
How to grow into a wise old guy
Tell me, teacher
Why is he so much more than I?
He’s a stranger now
So much stranger now
How life seems to divide
Brothers apart, heart from heart
The truth from men who lied
