Someone--please help! "Don't be afraid be my friend" lyrics-PLEASE READ!

I am desperately trying to find the artist who sings the song with what I perceive the chorus to be "Don't be afraid be my friend". It is sung by a black female (most likely) from late 80s early 90s...has a slow r and b/pop feel to it. I will try and put the lyrics in order and I will type as many lyrics as I know.

This is all that I know
I hear "don't be afraid be my friend" over and over so I assume its the chorus, but I have had no luck in searching.

My guess would be to search black female pop r/b singers from 80s/90s? Maybe someone has heard this song-I'm sure of it. I used to hear it at work a lot.

maybe a Mariah Carey song...she had a couple from that time period i think. the lyrics almost seem her styl too.

"Stop Running Away" is one of my favorite songs.

It is on Brenda Russell's "Kiss Me With The Wind" album, as well as her "Greatest Hits" and "Ultimate Collection".

I've been looking for this same song! After about an hour of Google search, I came across this thread, which is the same forum in which I just joined this week! The following are the only lyrics I had to go by, probably erroneous.
