In this case, 'stati' doesn't mean 'to stop' but 'to fit'.

to fit, go in; nije mi sve stalo u kofer = I could not get everything into the suitcase; pismo neće da stane u koverat = the letter will not fit into the envelope

I sort of got lost in this correcting.. between the idea to only correct and the idea to translate as I would ... so.. I suppose I should've just made corrections (so that you wouldn't think that your translation is entirely wrong) and maybe make my own versions later .. Anywaysss....

when i feel a premonition of distance - this is actually not so incorrect but... he says it in general (not like - him feeling it) and I'd translate it "when the distance is in the air"
i zadnja karta otvori
and the last card gets opened (see here - all the cards but the green one are open)

And about the cards.. yes .. that is why I put the picture (I wasn't joking )
Because there's an expression "sve su karte otvorene = all the cards are on the table, meaning = every detail is known now, nothing is hidden any more (like that one card in my picture which is unopened - it's hiding something behind)
His last card opened means that everything is clear now even without speaking
