Kalmannäkijä
The one who sees the death*
Naula päähän, selkä puuta vasten
A nail on the head, the back against the wood
Tässä humalani selvitän
Here I will sober up
Siirryit toiseen aikaan, toiseen paikkaan
You moved to other time, to other place
Jossa henki elävän ei ole tyhjää enemmän
Where the soul of the living is worth nothing
Ristipetäjääsi käsillä mittaan
Your cross pine I measure with my hands
Muistopuutasi kuristan
Your memento tree I throttle
Oksat poikki, juuret irti
Branches off, roots loose
Rajan perässäni ylitän
I cross the line/boundary behind me
Sinut henkiin palautan
I will bring you alive
Tunnen kalmanväen ihollani
I feel the dead people on my skin
Homeenhajun nokassani
The smell of mold in my nose
Päästäkää vapaaksi
Set free
Antakaa pois
Give away
Kallein aarteeni
My most precious treasure
Ei, et saa takaisin
No, you won’t get (it) back
Viemme pois
We take away
Sen mitä rakastit
The one you loved
Morsian multakruunua kantaa
The bride wears a soil crown
Matoja hunnussaan
Worms in her veil
Tuokaa haudoistanne esiin
Bring out from your graves
Varjoista valoon nostakaa
From the shadows, lift up in the daylight
Se mikä valon on omaa
The one who belongs to the light
Päästäkää vapaaksi
Set free
Antakaa pois
Give away
Kallein aarteeni
My most precious treasure
Ei, et saa takaisin
No, you won’t get (it) back
Viemme pois
We take away
Sen mitä rakastit
The one you loved
Antakaa pois
Give away
Päästäkää vapaaksi
Set free
Kallein aarteeni
My most precious treasure
Rippeet rakkaani
Remains of my love
Antakaa takaisin
Give back
Päästäkää vapaaksi
Set free
Maatuva vaimoni
My decomposing** wife
Kalmanväen tanssiinkutsu
The dead people’s invitation to a dance
Ruumiin mullan rikin katku
The smell of the body soil sulphur
Lihat luista, silmät päistä
The flesh made of bones, the eyes made of heads
Toukat kolot täyttämässä
Caterpillars filling the holes
Nahka naarmuilla ja ratki
The scratched and burst skin
Sormet poikki, luita katki
The fingers off, the bones broken
Suunsa auki, silti vaiti
The mouth open, and still silent
Järkkyy sielu, tarttuu tauti
The soul is traumatized, the disease will be infectious
* 'Kalma' is a a difficult word to translate in a way that it refers to death but is more archaic and mystical word than the generally used 'death' or 'dead'.
** For me, the word 'decompose' reminds of organic waste in a composter. But the message of the line is that the wife is dying and roting.
I have never heard this song before but I really liked the lyrics. Good choice.
