Default 'day at the end of the world'....?

Hi, I was in Italy for the millenium New Year. There was a song on the radio at the time, it was a modern sparkly Europop style and with a haunting melody, interesting chord changes, kind of melancholy... a medium-tempo beat, a sweeping 'wall of sound' style (the closest overall sound I can come up with is Pizzicato 5..) and the verse or chorus ended with (I think).. "a day.. at the end of the world" (or, last day at the end of the world). The video, which was in all the bars/cafe's at the time, was of a pretty dark-haired female singer (don't know if she was solo or the lead in a group.. I think the latter)... I think she was European and not Asian. She was smiling and there were images kind of swirling around her. Every time I try to look it up the U2 song comes up (although the tempo of the song I'm looking for is very similar to the U2 song), and an endless list of others with the words 'end of the world' in the title. It's almost like I imagined this.. or the song just disappeared off the face of the earth! Been looking for it for the past 10 yrs.. I really just want to find it for nostalgia's sake. I've also tried to find a list of the most popular pop songs in Italy/ Europe at the time and I can't seem to find such a list.. other than the usual top 40 stuff. I don't think this song ever made it to the U.S., unless it was in the club/dance/DJ circuit.. since it was more that kind of vibe. I've tried looking online (by the one line of the song I remember-- not sure if that was the title or not).. on YouTube, etc... Can anyone help...?

Well I must have looked at 40 videos lol... kept me busy

I saw Skeeter Davis, Nina Gordon, Carpenters, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Satanic Surfers, Super Furry Animals, Agnetha, Anne Murray.... oh loads of them, but they're mostly male bands ie Smithereens, U2, REM.

The only band I could find with a dark haired female singer (in fact the only video/lyric set I could find with a lead female singer full stop) was Senser - and they were around at the time. I've got this feeling it isn't this, but I'll post it anyway.

This song was released in late 1999. It has the line in the chorus, "And now I think I'll get through the end of the world".

Hey thanks, guys..... but those were not it! I've already done a ton of internet searches, but don't know how to find songs that were being played on the radio (& video) in Italy during Dec.99- Jan 2000. Anyone know? Like I said the sound is more Europop... the closest thing I can compare it to at the moment is Pizzicato Five....

except the tempo of the 'lost' song is about half the speed of this one (and not as poppy), and the melody is sweeter & more melancholy.. has some similar chord changes though... I don't know if the group was from Italy or somewhere else in Europe.... as I've never heard of them before or since and the song must be unknown in the U.S.

This one was a Eurodance hit in 1998. It has the line, "We're all counting the hours and days till the end of all time ".

Nope.. not it! the beat is too fast and dance-oriented, too techno. The beat of the mystery song is slower and it's a 1-2-3,, 1-2-3,, 1-2-3,, 1-2-3,, beat (emphasis on THREE... I don't know musically, what that's called). But the tempo really is similar to the U2 song. No faster and no slower.

"Now's the time. If I'm right, then we've come to the end of the line."

This song was done by a British group that had a string of hit singles in Europe from 1998-2000:

Nope.. it wasn't an R&B type song... it was a Caucasian gal (I think now she wasn't Asian or part Asian, but probably European/Eastern European?), white with black hair..... think of the U2 song 'Until the End of the World'.. (1-2-THREE.. 1-2-THREE.. 1-2-THREE) the beat was almost the exact same timing/tempo/speed. (Maybe,, that's because the song I'm trying to think of was inspired by the U2 one, even the lyrics....?)
And I'm wracking my brain to remember if it was sung in English or not.... it could have been a different language, but maybe the English subtitles from the video just stuck in my head? ..or it was sung in English with a European accent..?
And again.. I remember it kind of had that big 'Wall of sound' sound.... like techno or dance music at the time... think Pizzicato 5 (a slowed down version)... and the melody had interesting chord shifts.
So if it doesn't fit all these criteria, it's not the song...!

I also remember the melody & mood captured the feeling of uncertainty & anxiety about the end of the millenium & beginning of the new one..

hhmm..... well it's the right year, and the sound is a bit closer, but it's a more bittersweet melody with more interesting chord shifts. Also the singer is more 'exotic' (whatever that really means!).. she had long black hair with bangs, I believe. Maybe French, maybe part Indian, maybe part Asian, Eastern European..... (maybe??). I don't get it.. How does a song/video from not that long ago just drop off the face of the earth.......??

Nope.... again, she was a caucasian/white singer... most likely European or possibly part Asian. Long black hair. And more of a World-Europop sound (not really techno).. again, think Pizzicato 5 but slower and less ironically hip (I sound like a broken record here~!). I admire your persistence though bugmenot.. & appreciate you trying! Because this is seriously driving me mad.....

Good try, bug! The look of the video is closer than the others ones you suggested.... however mix in a lot more color and the singer looks at the camera more (smiling more). The sound is bigger, more influenced by Euro club music or 60's Phil Spector (that may be a stretch, just what my ears are hearing..) More influenced by 90's music, since it was from late '99. The B*witched song has that modern 'Nashville' sound.. too slick, generic pop/country/whatsit?... with that robo- voice effect. In the mystery song, there is a fuller/wider effect to her voice (don't know the proper technical term...) Someone somewhere knows this song......!!
btw.... I want to add that the song/video was being played in cafe's/bars in Sicily... not sure if I heard/saw it in Italy too, we probably did but don't remember now.
