Lightbulb How did you remember this one?

    Well...
I've downloaded the full album and wrote down the lyrics.
First of all let's talk about what it says.
It speaks about the memories of the writer, from his early years, when he used to go fishing with his accompanies during summer by a boat.
The writer also refers to it with nostalgia as he admits that his life nowadays is more stable and doesn't include the carelessness that used to have.
    It has some naval phrases:
"πρίμα"= from behind us (pushing us) = nowadays we say "όλα μου πάνε πρίμα"= everything is favor for me
"έγια μόλα"= the phrase was "έγια μόλα, έγια λέσα" and it was used to synchronize oarsmen for their forward and backward movements.Nowadays we can use it as "set sail".
    There is another strange word
"μαρμάγκα"= poisonous spider (not many greeks know this one!). But nowadays we often use the phrase "τον τρώει η μαρμάγκα"= he is left over (OR he's getting hurt OR generally something bad is happening to him). Note that the phrase can be used to all verb's tenses "τρώω, έφαγα, έχω φάει, είχα φάει, θα φάω and so on".

    So here are the lyrics:

    Lyrics: Antoni Adrikakis
    Music: Christo Nikolopoulos

Το 'να πόδι μες τη βάρκα
One foot is inside the boat
    τ' άλλο πόδι στη στεριά.
the other foot is on the ground
    Λύσε ξεκινάμε
    Untie and we leave
    κι όπου θέλεις πάμε.
and we're going wherever you want
    Φέρε πρίμα το βοριά.
Bring the norther in our favour

    Ένα μάτσο φιλαράκια
    A bunch of buddies
    πλήρωμα για τη χαρά,
    a crew for happiness
    ήταν καλοκαίρι
    it was summer
    ντάλα μεσημέρι
in the middle of the noon
και είχε η βάρκα μας φτερά.
    and our boat had wings

    Έγια μόλα
    Let's sail
    μες τα "όλα"
    into everything
    σαν ατρόμητοι "Σεβάχ".
    like courageous "Sevach"
    Τώρα έφυγε η τρέλλα
    Now that craziness has gone
    και μας έμεινε το "αχ"
and we're left with an "Ach" (Αχ=sigh)

    Βάζαμε μαζί τα φράγκα
We shared our drachmas ("φράγκα"=drachmas or money )
    για τσιγάρα και καφέ.
    to buy cigarettes and coffee
    Κάναμε το μάγκα
We're acting like macho (or you can say "we were acting like the "cleverones" ")
κι ήρθε η μαρμάγκα και μας έφαγε αδερφέ.
and now we're in trouble, my brother

    Κόβαμε τα παντελόνια
    We were cutting our trousers
    μπέναμε μες τις σπηλιές,
    we were entering caves
    έπιαναν χταπόδια
    they were catching octopuses
    τα γυμνά μας πόδια
    our naked feet
    μες της γης τις αγκαλιές.
    into earth's hugs

    Hope i helped

but life they retained in their own keeping"

Thank you a lot for your kind and efficient help, with detailed explanations. It was a difficult text, barely understandable by non-Greeks (at least!) and you made a remarkable effort, congratulations.
In fact I had little hope that someone could/would help me, but you came...

Now something easier. From the song "den kleino mati" (Voskopoulos) I don't understand some words:
[den kleino mati] panathema ti (once in one word, once in 2 words)
    [i nyxta tha me] paidepsi
    [...pali na] alitepsei
[tu mou exeis kanei kai ola tou] synxorao

    Pali evxaristo poly.

    Smile That was easy!

That was easy for me (nor for you btw!)

    πανάθεμα (με/σε/τον/την/το) = damn (me/you/him/her/it)
"paidepsi"= simple past tense of "παιδεύω"=make someone's life difficult
"alitepsei"= simple past tense of "αλητεύω"= screw around
"synxorao" = another way to say "συγχωράω - συγχωρώ" = to forgive

Yeap the first one and the last one was pretty difficult for you i suppose!

Thank you again, Amethystos, for your help. It's a real pleasure to meet such an educated person, with a large culture, not neglecting easy translations!

BTW, I didn't find the verb in the dictionary, what does "tha mpw" mean?

tha mpw = θα μπω = simple future of "μπαίνω" (εγώ μπαίνω = I'm entering)

You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"

Thank you, Amethystos. You may see how much progress is left in order to improve my knowledge of the greek grammar! (to say nothing about the rest...)

If only I had more time but there are so many things to do in the life! Happily there are nice people like you, always ready to help poor ignoramus like me!

Hey! Please realize that languages are just "media" for the communication of people. So try to have fun and understand as much as you can, without any thoughts of grammar. Just have fun and ask as much as you can.
Remember that we are all here, just for the fun!
You are simply doing a great work with greek language since you can understand almost anything.

And now i think it's time for a confess.... you know that the last year i realized that i was doing a wrong use in 2 greek "common" words?
Well i really felt stupid as i'm Hellin and didn't know Hellinika, but i realized that there would be a lot of cases in the future that i would have to search advanced greek dictionaries.

At the end there's something that we all have to remember....
In Hellinika we're saying : "Αυτά μου φαίνονται Κινέζικα" while in English we translate "That's all greek for me".....
"Gilgamesh, where are you hurrying to?
You will never find that life for which you are looking.
When the gods created man they allotted to him death,
but life they retained in their own keeping"
