Shab e Meykhooneh
A Night at the Tavern
Man mikhâm beh khooneh khodâ beram
Ageh meykhooneh naram kojâ beram
I want to go to a place where I can meet God
I have no place to go but the tavern
Vâseh man keh del shekastam
Az gham e zamooneh khastam
Ageh masti am nabâsheh
Mey parasti ham nabâsheh
Digeh chi too zendegi
darmoon e dardâyeh mane
Ageh meykhooneh nabâsheh
pas kojâ jâyeh maneh
Man mikhâm beh khooneh khodâ beram
Ageh meykhooneh naram kojâ beram
As I am broken-hearted
(and) weary of the sadness in this world
If there was no drunkenness,
If there was no insobriety,
In this life,
what would be the remedy of my pains and sorrows?
If there was no tavern,
where would I go?
I want to go to a place where I can meet God
I have no place to go but the tavern
Ageh ghalbamo shekastan
Hameh darâ ro bastan
Dar e meykhooneh keh bâzeh
Masti am keh chareh sâzeh
Ba'ad az in sorâghamo
Az shab e meykhoone begir
Ba'ad az in sorâghamo
Az mey o peymooneh begir
Man mikhâm beh khooneh khodâ beram
Ageh meykhooneh naram kojâ beram
Although they broke my heart
(and) left me helpless
The tavern is always there for me
(and) my drunkenness is my remedy
From now on,
you can find me at night by the tavern
From now on,
you will see me drunk with a cup of wine in my hand
I want to go to a place where I can meet God
I have no place to go but the tavern

I don't want to meet all these unfaithful people
I want to meet someone who is romantic, passionate and sincere
In the end, only those drunk people at the tavern would help me
(in the end) only the cupbearer*, the wine and the cup would help me
From now on,
you can find me at night by the tavern

Oh you my (shining) moon, oh you my majesty
Oh you my Kaaba**, oh you my sire
You are the reason behind my drunkenness
Oh you my universal love
The reason behind my drunkenness is you
You are the wine cellar, you are the grape
My sweetheart, you are all light
My depiction of wine is you
I am generously devoted to you
I am devoted and virtuous
(because of you) I have not been corrupted
Oh you are the one whose love is my bond
Without wine, how can I be drunk?
Without your affection, I am so pitiful
so sorrowful, so woeful
Damn this destiny of mine
You are more beautiful than love
You are more magnificent than the teardrop
You are more splendid than the grieving
in this gloomy night of mine
Oh you my (shining) moon, oh you my majesty
Oh you my Kaaba, oh you my sire
Forgive (me), forgive (me)
I beg your forgiveness for my mistakes
Forgive (me), forgive (me)
I beg your forgiveness for my mistakes
Deli dâram balayeh eshgh o dideh
Mosibathâyeh donyâ ro keshideh
Bemiram man vaseh oon del e shekasteh
Keh chon man kheyri az in donyâ nadideh
Keh chon man kheyri az in donyâ nadideh
I have a heart which has suffered the pain of love,
(which) has suffered the cruelty of this world
I feel so sorry for this broken heart of mine,
as it has never found happiness in this life just like me
as it has never found happiness in this life just like me

(How can I complain of) the departure at night
(How can I complain of) the departure at night
How can I complain?
How can I complain of the hand of fate***?
Since your eyes can't heal my wounds^,
how can I complain of my incurable wounds?
All my pains, sorrows and sufferings are because of
the impending separation, (and) I sense it
My soul has been hurt by thousands of sorrows
How can I complain, as it is the nature of this world?

Oh love^^, my heart is crying because of you^^^
Oh love, my heart is grieving because of you
I don't believe anyone can avoid breaking her own heart
because of the sufferings caused by you
I don't believe anyone can avoid suffering agonies of you
in her own already broken heart
I am the drowning one who is not afraid of the tide
Oh love, (I am the drowning one) who is (bravely) submerged by your sea

* A poetic word for "the bartender"
** A building in the shape of a cube which is located in Saudi Arabia. It is the holiest place for Muslims. In this song, it signifies the utmost respect of the lover for her beloved.
*** In addition to "the hand of fate", it can be translated as "the wheel of fortune".
^ By wounds, the poet wants to magnify the agonies of love.
^^ In this stanza, the word "love" signifies love in general not a specific one.
^^^ Literal translation of this sentence can be: "I have a heart which has seen the calamity caused by love".
