    Post MIA. - Zirkus

    Another MIA. song, this time with circus-style musical influences.

    As much as I like this song, I had a hard time understanding some of the commands and idioms. Some of the lines might be completely wrong! I'd love to know if I've screwed something up. Particularly tricky areas have been marked with an asterisk (*).

    ---

    Dab dab da da dab dab dada da

    Augen schließen, Beine strecken,
    Shut your eyes, stretch your legs,
    Köpfchen Richtung Himmel recken,
    raise your head heavenwards.
    * Schritte setzen, Raum vermessen
    Stick your steps, survey the room.
    Jetzt nur nicht den Text vergessen
    Now just don't forget the words!
    * Immer noch ein Sprösschen weiter auf der Karriereleiter
    Still [just] a *** further up the job ladder. [I think "Sprösschen" must be idiomatic. Maybe the idea is "Still a step further up the job ladder"?]
    Tag um Tag, beim bunten treiben,
    Day by day, [through] the hustle and bustle,
    Immer schön im Rhythmus bleiben
    always stay beautifully in rhythm.

    Dab dab da da dab dab dada da

    Zappelphillips, Frauen von Welt
    [The] fidgeters, women of [the] world,
    sitzen dicht bei dicht gedrängt,
    [they all] sit tightly crammed together.
    fühlen dass sie etwas lockert, während ich in den Seilen häng
    [They] feel something [in them] relax while they're hanging on by a thread. [I was trying to figure out a way to convey both the literal sense of "hanging on the ropes" with the idiomatic sense of being exhausted.]
    Kommt herbei ihr Akrobaten, Feuerschlucker von überall
    In come the acrobats, the fire-eaters from everywhere.
    Lebenskünstler, Zauberlehrling, unauffählig auf jeden Fall
    Hedonists, sorcerer's apprentices, [completely] ordinary in every way.

    In der Manege, in dem Rampenlicht,
    In the spotlight in the circus ring,
    sieht man meine weisse Schminke - ich steh dahinter
    you see my white stage make-up, with me standing behind.
    In der Arena, auf dem Trapez,
    In the arena, on the trapeze,
    hab ich Zeit für Fantasie
    I have time to dream.

    * Feierabend Herzensbrecher
    Closing time, [a] ladykiller.
    * Zeig dein fröhlichstes Gesicht
    Show your happiest face.
    dann lass ich meine Beine fliegen,
    Then I let my legs fly,
    balancier im Gleichgewicht
    poised in balance.
    * Lasst uns eins ab heut beschließen,
    Let's decide, as of today,
    bis wir uns einmal wieder sehen,
    until we see each other again,
    * uns hinter nichts als Luft mehr zu verstecken,
    to hide behind nothing more than air,
    im Zirkus wie im wahren Leben
    in the circus, like in real life.

    Dab dab da da dab dab dada da

    In der Manege, in dem Rampenlicht,
    In the spotlight in the circus ring,
    sieht man meine weisse Schminke - ich steh dahinter
    you see my white stage make-up, with me standing behind.
    In der Arena, auf dem Trapez,
    In the arena, on the trapeze,
    hab ich Zeit für Fantasie
    I have time to dream.

    In der Manege, in dem Rampenlicht,
    In the spotlight in the circus ring,
    hört man mein glockenhelles Lachen - ich steh dahinter
    you hear my ringing laughter, with me standing behind.
    In der Arena, hoch auf dem Seil,
    In the arena, high on the ropes,
    lass ich drei Wünsche frei
    I let three wishes free.

    Meine Damen und Herren, soll ich mit Feuereifer durch den Feuerreifen?
    Ladies and gentlemen, should I zealously [spring] through the fire ring? [I like the verb "spring" because it rhymes with "ring," which echoes the similarity between the words "Feuereifer" and "Feuerreifen." That is, both have a phonetic similarity in the word pairs.]
    Oder mit dem Kopf in die Höhle des Löwen?
    Or put my head in the mouth of a lion?
    Oder wie wärs wenn ich mich auf das allerhöchste seil traue?
    Or how would it be if mustered up the courage [to climb] to the highest rope?
    * Oder woll´n vielleicht... SIE?
    Or perhaps... would you [like to]?

    In der Manege, in dem Rampenlicht,
    In the spotlight in the circus ring,
    * wir brauchen alle was zu lachen,
    we need everybody to laugh [about] something.
    In die Arena, auf das Trapez,
    In the area, on the trapeze,
    hier haben wir Zeit für Fantasie.
    we have time to dream.

    In der Manege, in dem Rampenlicht,
    In the spotlight in the circus ring,
    * hier holen wir immer noch ein *** aus dem Ärmel.
    we fetch the ace hidden in our sleeves. ["We still fetch our hidden aces." I'm not sure that translation would fully explain the idiom, though.]
    In der Arena, hoch auf dem Seil
    In the area, high on the ropes,
    * turn wir eine Utopie.
    we *** a utopia. [I just can't figure out the verb.]

    Da dab da da dab dab da da da,

    Exclamation One remark by amaryn

    Where you put asterixes I have written "correct" where I was sure it's right.
