The very word "chalga" is Turkish and it means something like brass music, I think :]]

"chalga" is in fact in Turkish" çal`gı" /"чалгъ"and it means just music

Adrian, not only bulgarian"chalga" has such orientalistic sounding.I listen to a lot of Serbian music too and its sounding is almost the same.They make covers of Greek,Turkish and Arabic hits too.Albanian music also contains many of the same characteristics.Albanians even make many covers of bulgarian pop-folk songs.Romanian "manele" and Greek music sound a bit diffrenet but the chalga has some of them too That's why "chalga" now can be called just"balkanic music".
The only Balkanic countries that don't produce music in the style of "chalga"/"turbofolk" are Macedonia and Slovenia.
