Serbian /Croatian chit-chat off topic discussions

pthalo as I know Hungarian is pretty hard to pronounce And as I've heard it has about 30 cases! Actually isn't Hungarian spoken in some north regions of Slovenia too?

Hungarian does have some sounds that are hard for people of other languages to pronounce. Many people find it hard to pronounce gy and ty, but it's easier for people who speak Serbian to pronounce those sounds because gy is the same as đ and ty is like tj (not like ć). But we have ö and ü which is easy for Germans to pronounce but hard for English speakers. But you have ö in Bulgarian it seems so...

And yes, we have about 25 cases, less depending on what counts as a case. Hungarian is spoken in Slovenia near the border to Hungary, in Vojvodina, in Romania (the part that used to be part of Hungary), in Slovakia, especially near the border. My favourite case is -vá/-vé which is transformative. You use it when something changes into something else, like to turn into ice or if a witch turns you into a frog. There's a line from a song "mivé legyek így nélküled" and it means "what will become of me like this without you", and it's the -vé case on the word "mi" (what)

Hmm I think in fact ur sound for jo is more like the Turkish one ( and the German as well)... our is a bit different
btw we call hungarians "ungarci" not "madjari" only in our History books theyr mentioned as madjari. And Hungary in Bulgarian is Ungarija. Actually the only word I know in Hungarian is " Magyar" or some kinda which is in my language-options on the mobile phone

We call you "bolgárok" (-ok is plural). and yes, ö is slightly different sound than your schwa. it's ungarija and ungarci in Macedonian too And in Bulgarian you say Seged for the town I live in, not Segedin like they say in Serbian.

That's cool you can have Hungarian on your phone. My options are: English, Magyar, Slovenčina (Slovak not Slovene), and Čeština

So I'm stuck with Hungarian. I put it in English sometimes but then my friends get confused when trying to use my phone (maybe that's a good thing!)

haha of course I know Slovencina isn't Slovenian.It s Slovenščina.
Actually I began with Slovenian from january this year after I loved the songs of a Slovenian singer and I loved that language and the country and I decided I wanna study Slovenian.But it goes along here with Serbian and Croatian, so I'm gonna study the 3 of them And along with that I'm learning more and more Albanian words recently cuz I switched to "albanian wave" for music
So if I fall in love with Hungarian music, I'll probably learn much Hungarian

The difference between our and the mcd word for Hungary is that we pronounce it " ung`arci" and they probably- `ungarci.

I always forget which is which until I change my phone to Slovenšina and I don't understand anything. I understand a little Slovenščina because of Serbian and also because I tried to learn it in 2002 but I stopped after a while.

It's strange u don't understand Slovakian.When I saw a Slovakian lyric here I discovered that most words are actually very close to the Bulgarian ones, resp. to mcd and srb and especially to Slovenian.I even discovered recently that I understand some little Czech partly because of my Slavic blood and partly because I understand much Slovenian.I had some stupid Czach on my skype and he didn't speak Eng and he spoke to me only in Czech ,I suppose some not so pleasant words so in the end I cursed him in Slovenian and he immediately blocked me, so he's got what I told him

Well I understand some Slovak, quite a lot of i'm reading actually, but i understand so much more Slovene than Slovak.

here, i looked for some random text in Slovak on Wikipedia:

"Bitka o Midway bola námorná bitka na tichomorskom bojisku počas druhej svetovej vojny. Trvala od 4. do 7. júna 1942. Začala sa iba mesiac po bitke v Koralovom mori a pol roka po japonskom útoku na Pearl Harbor, ktorý zavliekol Spojené štáty do vojny."

I understand "Battle of Midway was ____ battle on ___sea ____started second world war. it lasted from 4 to 7 june 1942. ____ with ____ month for ___ in ____ sea and half _____ for japan ____ to Pearl Harbor ____ _____ to war."

so enough to understand what they're talking about but i miss a lot too

I like the way Hungarian sounds, it's just lovely! It's very difficult to pronounce, so I was very proud of myself when I finally managed to pick up 'thank you' in Hungarian during my visit to Budapest. I was really excited the other day on the bus when I sat next to some Hungarian people and could hear them speak. It was like a poem!

Zdravo, dear fellow members! I liked this forum from the first moment. My favorite hobby is learning languages. And one of the best ways to learn a foreign language is by listening to songs that use it.

I like all languages, from any part of this planet, but I admit that I particularly like the BCS (Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian) language. I hope that you guys will help me understand the lyrics that sometimes I don't understand. I like very much the voice of Hari Mata Hari and the music of EKV. I haven't yet explored Croatian songs.

I really don't understand why the Slovenian language is groupd with Czech and Slovak! It's a South Slavic language, and it's so close to BCS!

I don't know why Slovene is grouped that way either, though a friend from Slovenia did tell me once that when she was in Slovakia she did understand them 90% (which is more than someone from Serbia would understand if someone was talking to them in Slovene) BUT most Slovenes especially people my age and older speak and understand Croatian so idk.

True, I've heard of such cases. Well, I don't know how a natural speaker of Slovene or BCS or Slovak feels about it. I can't feel it because my natural language is Greek, i.e. not Slavic. Anyway, for me, the closeness between Slovene and BCS is more than obvious.

You mean, Croatian? Or, anyway, BCS? (as I prefer to call the whole language continuum of Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian) Well, I always wanted to specialize in a Slavic language. I am fascinated by their grammar and structure, especially the case system: they are like ancient languages, like Latin or Greek, but very much alive! Only Bulgarian and Macedonian are quite different (no cases, suffixed articles). I have studied a bit of all Slavic languages (except Belarusian), but with BCS I have the chance to hear it and use it more and more, since there are thousands of Serbians coming to Halkidika every summer! This means that I use mainly ekavian, but I always learn also the ijekavian forms, and also the vocabulary differences (voz/vlak, hleb/kruh, pozorište/kazalište, avion/zrakoplov, srećan/sretan etc.)

I have been to Croatia in 2002, but just beacuse of the Zagreb airport (my Slovene friends took me from there and we went to stay in Maribor). But soon I will get in my car and visit Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Romania. I have been planning this journey for years, and next summer I will have the time and money to do it, at last!

Wow, that's great, I see you're very interested, and I'm so glad to talk to such person. I'm also fascinated by languages and at the moment I'm studying italian and russian in the university so I'm dedicated to them. In future I'd like to learn greek (I have no idea how could I miss such beautiful language till now, I'm saying this cos I discovered it recently), romanian (this one also fascinates me because it's so different of all romance languages), finnish, japanese and hebrew (so beautiful language)
Your trip sounds great, I wish I could come to Greece! Well, someday for sure, at least it's not so far
