how did bulgarians end up using the french word for "thanks" anyway?

ne znam but the french way is spelt merCi

but you read it as mersi and in slavonic languages you write as you read :P I mean one letter has only one sound not like f.e. in english that "a" in the word cat sound different from "a" in the word "date"

anyways bulgarian has a word for bra from french -> sutien, in french it's sutien-gorge as far as i remember

you can see in bulgarian words from spanish (siguro-sigurno; pantalones-pantaloni), german (shtraus) etc etc

my french teacher is always having a go at me fore writing mersi and not merci

every language has some loanwords, but it's kinda strange to replace such a basic one as "blagodarya"

We never une Mersi formally ;] It's used in every-day speech. We aslo use the Italian"Ciao" [we write Chao] for bye, but you'll never say Chao to your teacher, for instance. You say Dovijdane :P

In socialism times the only western countries who had the right to make a schools for their language were East (in that time) Germany and France. Bulgaria is also a frankofon country and has great relations with France in governemnt and friend way. That`s because France had a big influence for Russia thanks to the russian tsar Petar І (who the people from FYROM say is macedonian, but that`s ridiculous).

The language gymnasiums (french and german, and in last 20 years the english gymnasiums) were and still are one of the most elite high schools in Bulgaria.

And because many students in that time studied in that high schools, that`s how the french has influenced on the bulgarian language.

Like in english we say the word deja vu, bon appeait, volia --> from the french and bravo --> idk the orginating country

but none of those really have a true english equivalent, unlike "mersi" in BG. and further to that, french has had a huge influence on english for a thousand years, because of how closely the languages are intertwined.

idk about a thousand years but 6 years of it has been enough for me

well Nere I don't know if u know (u have to know) that the Slovenes have taken the German word for "yes" and they use it in the every day speech.. they have their own word "da", as in Bulgarian we say "mersi".
So u can hear them saying more "ja" than "da"... it's quite a basic word too I think.

i know, and slovenes say "ciao" too. but, it's a proximity thing as much as anything, and "da" to "ja" isn't quite a leap like "blagodarya" to "mersi" ;p

well ... polish people also say sometimes chao for bye bye :P but we have our saying papa :P it deppends on the country :P i think chao and aide it's generally slavonic
