aferrar was a much, much better word to use there!

Is "por mi alrededor" gramatically possible? I think I've heard it before but I'm not sure

I honestly had to use a dictionary for "fade" so I don't know and I think I'm going to use "balancear" for sway.

You're welcome. Translating to Spanish isn't exactly my forte so don't quote me on any of these. I think "por mi alrededor" could work too though.
