Cool Solved! 70's era song: "The Day of the Fire"?

Hi all -- this has been bugging me for years. I know some of the lyrics by heart, but I haven't the foggiest notion who recorded it. I heard it played several times on a progressive rock radio station KSHE in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The musical accompaniment is a repetitive solo 3 note synthesizer riff, with guitar / drums entering (and leaving) in the middle 8.

On the day of the fire
    The sun rose red
And it covered half of the sky.
And the streets were teeming with terrified people
Convinced they were all gonna die.
    ....
There was hardly a soul who was looking
At the black ships landing nearby.

    (short middle 8 guitar break)

    ....
    And the children came running
    From every direction
To the black ships that had come from the sky.
    ....

Any ideas? Googling doesn't help me with this one. Thanks in advance!
