Another great performance by Hagit ...a song of Idan Reichel ...Talking Quietly ...Medabrim Besheket

[tJyCrQgjqes]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJyCrQgjqes

talk to me (in) simple words like we used to (talk), back then
when you were still writing letters of love
as when you were hugging, staying with me and not running away
you used to come and bring me a flower

talk to me (in) simple words like we used to (talk), back then
when you were still looking at me
falling asleep next to you, like when you were concerned
whether I'll always be yours

We were talking slowly then
we were talking quietly, saying little (words)
you used to look in my eyes when I was talking with you

talk to me (in) simple words like we used to (talk), back then
when you were still looking at me
falling asleep next to you, like when you were concerned
whether I'll always be yours

Hold me tight and don't let go
(I'm) going through hard times
I'm falling from the weight on my shoulders (2x)

The metaphoric ink hasn't dried out from the "page" of Kochav Nolad and he already releases a single.....
hmmmmmm Nice song...and nice eye-liner
Wasn't he a Mizrachit oriented singer ?
I can't detect any silsulim ...he toned it down. I wonder whether this is the new direction the Mizrachi music is heading.
I hope not....I miss the old soulful sound.

Nice song though ...very ....light and ......airy.

Abdel Halim Hafez's voice is my all time favorite Arabic voice....so soft,,,,,here is the original song ..sorry for the quality of the video ...very old one

[uZ9Zmpx6qHc]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ9Zmpx6qHc&feature=related

some of the lyrics
"Tell him, tell him , tell him the truth
tell him tell him tell him I loved him from the first moment"

From what I saw in the clip of the movie (worse quality) it's about a love of a father to his son.

and here is another cover version of this song by a young singer Marouan (from a show similiar to American Idol and Kochav Nolad) who paved his way to the finale of the show challenging his voice with Abdel Halim's very beautiful low tone.

Here he is again in another song of Abdel Halim Hafez's .....(I know I know...It's a Hebrew thread...bear with me for the sake of art and peace

Hi Batel,

Thanks for the clips! Marouane Hidaoui is quite a cutie and I love Abdel Halim Hafez's voice as well! I connection to Abdel Halim Hafez I, have a question that is a bit off-topic, but which might interest other members. I have heard from my Israeli friends about the Egyptian movies that were shown in Israel in the 80's and which were very popular, at least among the Mizrahi population. There are also references to Egyptian movies in the lovely Israeli film "The Band's Visit", which is about an Egyptian orchestra that by mistake ends up in an Israeli "development town" in the middle of the desert:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Band's_Visit

I have also heard about the Friday night Arab movies, which I think were mainly intended for the Israeli Arab population. However, I have the impression that these movies were also popular among many Jewish Israelis...you know, before Shabbat kicked in, they would watch the Arab movie on the telly. Do you have any (musical or otherwise) memories of this?

Best, Eva

I know that this is a Hebrew thread, but I just had to post this video from a "haflah" in Israel! Not the lush orchestras we see in the clips from the Arabic "Kochav Nolad", but a proof that Middle Eastern music is alive and well in Israel:

The "chazanut" channel is a treasure trove if you like classic Middle Eastern music and Mizrahi/Sephardi cantorial music:

Eva ...quite a walk down memory lane you're taking me now
SERET ARAVI is not just a description of a movie in Arabic. To that term are added the time: Fridays 5:30 pm, the scents of Shabbat's dinner being cooked, the images of my neighbours cleaning in frenzy to finish all chores before sunset and of course the sounds of various artists come out of gramophones from all over the block...Avner Gaddasi was the "rocker" Shimi Tavori brought romance and crazy vocals and the soul seekers never stopped listening to Zohar Argov....
SERET ARAVI ...One public channel....black and white TV ...small flat in a block...many kids whose parents couldn't not afford a TV set would crowd our small living room ....
We had less, a lot less than today but we were a lot more happier... we kids lived outside the house...we would enter it only for food and sleep ...
I got the little Arabic that I know today from those films which always ended in either a wedding or a police arrival ...
It took some time until we left that warm protective little village to discover we were second class citizens....we lost that cultural battle but in the long run we won the war. It was worth the wait.

Are you sure you're not Yemenite or Israeli ?

LOL! I wish I were...it would surely beat those long, cold winters in Stockholm! I'm not sure I could go back to live in Greece, but Israel I could try for a while...You know, cultural affinities often go across ethnic/religious lines. My in-laws in Greece come as refugees from Turkey to Macedonia in the 1920's and they were much looked down upon by the locals, who regarded them as "backwards"....although many Anatolian Greeks were both educated and prosperous (of course, most of them lost everything in the 1922 Disaster). They were often called "tourkomerites", that is "people from Turkey" or "Turks" although most of them spoke Greek and all were Orthodox Christians.

Anyway, my mother-in-law, who grew up in a Greek Turkish-speaking family LOVES the Turkish series that they are broadcasting nowadays on Greek television. She even corrects the Greek translations in the subtitles, telling us what the actors are really saying!. These series are all quite melodramatic, and not very different from Greek melodramas...and they have lots of great music. Most of my relatives watch them-in fact, one of them, "Τα σύνορα της αγάπης" ("The borders of love") had very high ratings, maybe especially in northern Greece, which has a large refugee population. I know that this is the Hebrew thread, but here is a lovely scene where one of the protagonists, Nikos from an Istanbul Greek family sings an old song in Greek and Turkish:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuWCOkDftxI

The whole series is based on the dramatic love story between Nazli, who is from a Muslim small-town family and Nikos, and all the problems they encounter because of their different backgrounds. Nazli's family has a pastry bakery, and there are lots of yummy scenes with her relatives making bourekas and other Turkish delicacies!

I'm thinking that many older Greeks are feeling the same kind of nostalgia for "the old country" and its culture as those men who listen to Arabic music in the chazanut videos....and watching Turkish series kind of takes them back to the country of their parents or grandparents.

Does anyone know anything about the movie from which the Haim Moshe clip is taken? It looks a bit like what I believe you call "bourekas" movies in Israel.
