    Default Running On The Inside

    I can't sleep tonight
I got too much on my mind
The day never seems to unwind
I feel like I'm still moving

I can still see the light
Shine in the middle of the night
It reminds me of why I'm alive
It shows me that you're by my side

    When I feel I'm breaking
    I turn to you now
When my world is left shaking
I bury my head into the ground.....
    Chorus"
    I'm running on the inside
Don't got a thing but the truth
I'm running from my past life
The one where nothing came true
    Well I'll never give up
    As long as I try
    I'm running on the inside
    And I'm running with you

    I can't escape the tension
    With failure comes no pension
I end up on the streets
    Begging towards the meek

    Please, please help me please
How many times can I say please?
Will the people wake up and see
That I’m just apart of the plead

    Feeding off the streets
    Living amongst the weak
It seems it's all just a dream
But then I wake up and see
    That I would be
    Alone with out you
    Chorus"
    I'm running on the inside
Don't got a thing but the truth
I'm running from my past life
The one where nothing came true
    Well I'll never give up
    As long as I try
    I'm running on the inside
    And I'm running with you

    I feel like I'm breaking
    Falling to the ground
    I must be mistaking
This life I have not found

    I'm full of temptation
    With my life unbound
    My own relation
    Is crashing down

    I need you now
    I need you now
    Can you hear me shout
    "Bridge"
    Oh lord guide me
    Through these crowds
And make me see what I have not found
Shine your light upon my soul
And deliver me from this loll
    Make me see through
    The darkest side of me
    And make me believe
    That this is me
Cast out these shadows from my mind
    And make me collide
In a world where I am by your side
I will run until the day
The whole world hears your name
    Chorus"
    I'm running on the inside
Don't got a thing but the truth
I'm running from my past life
The one where nothing came true
    Well I'll never give up
    As long as I try
    I'm running on the inside
    And I'm running with you
    I'm running on the inside
    In the direction of you
    I’m running on the inside
For the things I know are true
    I’m running on the inside
    And I'm running with you

John31: I am surprised no one posted so far! The title drew me today because I know what it means to "run on the inside." I do it quite often, and it deprives me of proper rest and sleep. As a matter of fact, that is when I feel it the strongest and when I feel the most alone; similar to your song. So, of course, I identify with this part of the chorus:

    I'm running on the inside
Don't got a thing but the truth

Then you add this unusual element, the last line:

I'm running from my past life
The one where nothing came true

And I say to myself, "I understand this too, all too well."

What I have to share with you the most is that I understand these feelings so very well, and that you have expressed them effectively especially in the first part of the song.

I do get a little lost in all that is happening in the song--homelessness; aloneness; but feeling an important nearness so that can get you through a hard time.

Certainly, if there is any seeming disjointedness (perhaps owing to the distressed condition expressed in the song), your strong chorus pulls it back together.

I am especially fond of the final chorus, with the slight changes toward the end, making for stronger impact and hope:

    I'm running on the inside
    And I'm running with you
    I'm running on the inside
    In the direction of you
    I’m running on the inside
For the things I know are true
    I’m running on the inside
    And I'm running with you

I hope this is helpful in some way.

Thank you very much. I got the idea from a bible verse that says we must run with Christ and he will get us through our hard times that's where it originated. Thank u for the feedback really helped me to see that it is telling the idea that I want it to say.

Oh yeah also the 2nd verse is a dream like the person in the song is dreaming about being in that situation and then the person wakes up opens their eyes and sees that it does not have to be that way.

Another Hit from John. So,what else is new? This is Magic, and I wish I'd written it!It reminds me of Jackson Browne's Title,"Running On Empty"!John are you a musician or simply a great Lyrics writer?I can't believe the talent on this site and to my knowledge, nobody(other than the writers themselves)have gotten any action from Bands wanting to record some songs!I'm trying to convince my old partners (known them since I was 15)to help me record a couple of my songs. So far,it's like pulling teeth, but I still have my hopes up!Good Luck,John,I hope someone records one or ten of your songs and you get the recognition you so richly deserve. Also, hope you let us,your fans, know when you do post your songs on YouTube,if in fact you do,post them there.

Hey, Doug, our English/American Rock historian (I mean this, cuz you seem to have a lot of knowledge at-the-ready!) . . . The only "Runnin' on Empty" I know is from Jackson Browne, theme song and album.

Am I missing out on something by the Eagles?

    Frankie,
I was listening to the Radio, and heard The Eagles play,"Running On Empty".It stuck in my mind because it was So Heavy, that I actually forgot Mr.Browne's original version.I edited my first Comment,so now it will look I knew what I was talking about!(That is until they read this!)Thanks for pointing out my oversight,I always give credit where credit's due.On reflection, maybe I got it confused with,"Life In the Fast Lane"!At least I'm honest!!!!
