Default Solved: Help me identify this song please

My dad would always sing this old cowboy song he says he learned in elementary school during the 60's

    Lyrics:

    Hang me by my boots
    hang me by my head
    take my shootin iron instead
but don't take my horse away
    we ate together
    we slept together
we traveled the world both far and near
    (something something) mystery
    made a little history
    well (something) all clear
So, Hang me by my boots
    hang me by my head
    take my shootin iron instead
but don't take my horse away

    anyone recognize?

Nikki, I swear, i think you and i are the only people in the whole world searching for this song. I think it's simply Don't Take My Hoss Away. I remember singing it in grade school in the 70s, but I dont recall the missing lyrics you need. I can't find it anywhere (and I mean no where) on the internet. How is that possible? It did show up briefly about 3 yrs ago, but nothing since, until I googled it about an hour ago and found your post. BTW, the version we sang in school used 'hoss' instead of 'horse'. Glad to find someone who knows this song.

    Hi Niki,

I found an old book where the song (title most likely "Don't take my hoss away") is mentioned.
The book is called "Indoor Ceremonies and Pageants"
The entry is to find on page 17 (next to last row)

My dad learned it in grade school and sang it to me when I was a child, he must have changed it to horse. This is so helpful thanks!

Here's how I learned it in school in the 70's:

    Lyrics:

    Hang me by my boots
    hang me by my head
    take my shootin iron instead
but don't take my hoss away
    Take away my spurs
    Take away my gal
Life's no good without my pal
So don't take my hoss away
    we ate together
    And we slept together
And we roamed the fields both far and near
    Shared our misery
    Made some history
    My old nag's a dear...
    So....
    Hang me by my boots
    hang me by my head
    take my shootin iron instead
but don't take my horse away
    Take away my spurs
    Take away my gal
Life's no good without my pal
So don't take my hoss away
No don't take my hoss away!

    Hope that helps!

Default Hang me by my boots?

I, too, learned this catchy little song in the 60's in elementary school. Webster, Texas.

I do not know the title.

    "Shared our misery,
    Made some history
    My old nag's a dear."

I learned it at Carderock Springs Elementary School, Maryland, circa 1972. For some reason we used the lyric "ankles" instead of "boots".
