    _______

    Here comes Johnny singin' oldies-goldies
    Be-bop-a-lula baby what I say...

He got the action, he got the motion
Oh yeah, the boy can play
    Dedication, devotion
He turnin' all the nighttime into the day
He do the song about the sweet lovin' woman
He do the song about the knife
    An' he do the walk
He do the walk of life
Yeah, he do the Walk of Life.

Here come Johnny gonna tell you the story
Hand me now my walkin' shoes
Here come Johnny with the power an' the glory
    Backbeat, we're talkin' blues...

And after all the violence and double-talk
It's just a song in all the trouble and the strife
    He do the walk
Yeah, he do the walk of life
Mm he do the [Rock] of Life.

ROCK and ROLL. I.e., that specific subset of spunky-funky rhythms and attitude that lifted Rock 'n' Roll out of its roots in Rhythm and Blues, Boogie, Jazz, Country, Big-Band and Western Swing, and a handful of other music traditions that preceded Rock Music. (Well, mostly "out", but not entirely. There's still a little of all that stuff sprinkled in and around Rock music, and vice versa.)

Snappy verse-chorus lyrics, at least 1 but often 2 or 3 electric guitars, maybe a sax and/or piano, and always-always-always, drums. 4/4 backbeat, downbeat, off-beat, snare drum, snap, clap, toe-tap, the beat-beat-THUNDER that ROCKS your feet. Roll Over Beethoven, Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay, I Love Rock 'n' Roll, the music incessantly praises itself, and we don't mind one little bit, 'cause we just "Can't Stop Rockin', baby till I lose my mind."

    Let me repeat..

Rock, Pop Rock, Blues Rock, Ballad-Rock, Folk Rock, Country Rock, Chicano Rock, Punk Rock and Psychedelic. Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy (Metal), Garage, Grunge, Retro, Progressive, Alternative, Indie(-pendent), Hip-Hop, Reggae, New Wave and Rave. Rockabilly, Southern Rock, Heartland, Uptown, Downtown, Motown, Euro, Emo, Screamo. Goth Rock, Brit-Pop, Synth-Pop, Disco, Techno, Electro-Swing and all Up Around The Bend.

Tin Pan Alley to Long Tall Sally. USA, Canada, Britain (and back), and then all the little nooks and crannies of the whole freakin' world. True Rock 'n' Roll is that "International Noise Conspiracy" that our parents used to warn us about. But we're past that now. True Rock won't make you pregnant or demonically insane, but it can and will make you go deaf long before you die. You hope.

    _______

However: This thread is not necessarily about everything listed 2 paragraphs up. This is about what makes us ROCK. "If don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Like that.

    And this:

    Some HISTORY.

How far back in time can we go? When the Levee Breaks was written about 50 years before Led Zeppelin was born, so we had to wait a little while for that one. The point is, the "history" of Rock is almost a circular argument, and I'm gonna forego most of that.

As for separating (time-wise and otherwise) the genre of Rock from R&B, etc, I prefer to depend (as much as anything else) on how the music charts back in the day "measured" and classed the song as (for example) R&B or not.

But now just to mention a couple of high points in the timeline:

    1949: The 45 RPM record.
1951: A Jukebox to stack and play the 45's in.

What else? Oh yeah, The Les Paul solid-body electric guitar in 1952, and Leo Fender's Stratocaster a year or 2 later. And we got the basic drum kit way before that, somewhere around 1930.

"So let's play some Rock 'n' Roll!"

And if I don't do this real quick, I might be accused of rock-history-heresy. Written in 1953, released and charted in 1955:

In another vein, I would feel myself at fault if I didn't mention that Rock had a substantial part of its beginning in the American South. For example (name, birthplace, year first charted a "Rock 'n' Roll" song):

    Fats Domino, Louisiana, 1949.

    Bo Diddley, Mississippi, 1955.

Elvis Presley, Mississippi to Memphis, 1955.

Buddy Holly, Texas, 1955. At the Apollo? Oh Boy.

    Chuck Berry, Missouri, 1955.

Little Richard, Georgia, 1955. "Rhythm 'n' Blues had that baby, and they called it Rock 'n' Roll."

    Jerry Lee Lewis,[/b] Louisiana, 1956.

    Everly Brothers, Lentucky, 1957.

Little Eva (born and died in North Carolina), 1962.

In later decades: Black Oak Arkansas, Blackfoot, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet...

    Meanwhile, just up the road:

The Diamonds, Canada, 1957... and 47 years later (2004), it's incredible they still sounded so damn good:

    Chubby Checker, Philadelphia, 1960.

    Danny & the Juniors

Rock 'n' Roll. Dance Dance Dance.

Write a song about it, and dance some more.

Well you can rock it you can roll it
You can slop and you can stroll it
At the hop (hop hop, hop)
    When the record starts spinnin'
    You calypso when you chicken
At the hop (hop hop, hop)
    Do the dance sensation
    That is sweepin' the nation
At the hop (hop hop, hop)

    Let's go to the hop
Let's go to the hop (oh baby)
Let's go to the hop (oh baby)
    Let's go to the hop
Coooome ooooon, let's to the hop

Well you can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to move it
    At the hop (aaah ah-aaah)
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the coolest
    At the hop (aaaaah)
    All the cats and chicks
    Can get their kicks
    At the hop

    The Chicken

Little Eva: Come on, come on, do the Loco-Motion with me.

Dunno how I forgot to "highlight" this one under "Dance" ...

'Fabulous' UFO they were one of the bands that started pulling me toward Metal when I was in college. First i really liked some stuff on their Walk On Water album like this song....

Then went further back and really got hooked. Love the way that this opens...

But I mean 'light' metal. I didn't start getting into the German groups and metal opera like Kamelot until about 5 years later. I'm looking for some of that now....would also like it if some of the guys in Lyrics Review will step up and add a little something to this thread

As far as I know, it was first applied to the album "Tommy" by The Who
