Here comes Johnny singin' oldies-goldies
Be-bop-a-lula baby what I say...
He got the action, he got the motion
Oh yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
He turnin' all the nighttime into the day
He do the song about the sweet lovin' woman
He do the song about the knife
An' he do the walk
He do the walk of life
Yeah, he do the Walk of Life.
Here come Johnny gonna tell you the story
Hand me now my walkin' shoes
Here come Johnny with the power an' the glory
Backbeat, we're talkin' blues...
And after all the violence and double-talk
It's just a song in all the trouble and the strife
He do the walk
Yeah, he do the walk of life
Mm he do the [Rock] of Life.
ROCK and ROLL. I.e., that specific subset of spunky-funky rhythms and attitude that lifted Rock 'n' Roll out of its roots in Rhythm and Blues, Boogie, Jazz, Country, Big-Band and Western Swing, and a handful of other music traditions that preceded Rock Music. (Well, mostly "out", but not entirely. There's still a little of all that stuff sprinkled in and around Rock music, and vice versa.)
Snappy verse-chorus lyrics, at least 1 but often 2 or 3 electric guitars, maybe a sax and/or piano, and always-always-always, drums. 4/4 backbeat, downbeat, off-beat, snare drum, snap, clap, toe-tap, the beat-beat-THUNDER that ROCKS your feet. Roll Over Beethoven, Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay, I Love Rock 'n' Roll, the music incessantly praises itself, and we don't mind one little bit, 'cause we just "Can't Stop Rockin', baby till I lose my mind."
Let me repeat..
Rock, Pop Rock, Blues Rock, Ballad-Rock, Folk Rock, Country Rock, Chicano Rock, Punk Rock and Psychedelic. Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy (Metal), Garage, Grunge, Retro, Progressive, Alternative, Indie(-pendent), Hip-Hop, Reggae, New Wave and Rave. Rockabilly, Southern Rock, Heartland, Uptown, Downtown, Motown, Euro, Emo, Screamo. Goth Rock, Brit-Pop, Synth-Pop, Disco, Techno, Electro-Swing and all Up Around The Bend.
Tin Pan Alley to Long Tall Sally. USA, Canada, Britain (and back), and then all the little nooks and crannies of the whole freakin' world. True Rock 'n' Roll is that "International Noise Conspiracy" that our parents used to warn us about. But we're past that now. True Rock won't make you pregnant or demonically insane, but it can and will make you go deaf long before you die. You hope.

However: This thread is not necessarily about everything listed 2 paragraphs up. This is about what makes us ROCK. "If don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Like that.
