Either there’s something too metaphorical going on here and I’m too literal to interpret the underlying meaning, ooor those lyrics above are rather freaky!! Makes no sense to me..Hope makes some sense to you!!

If you come from home at dawn
I’ll have the key on the door
If you want we will break down the barriers
Two postmen forgotten during the walk

Tell me, tell me if you want,
    what worries/scares you on holidays
Tell me, tell me if you want,
    what worries/scares you on holidays
Only about her don’t tell me
Only about her don’t tell me
    I’ve closed/locked her into yesterday
    I’ve closed/locked her into yesterday
Only about her don’t tell me

If you come from home at dawn
To tell more about your good stories
    Those that animate the statues
And roll down the shutters in puzzlement

Tell me, tell me if you want,
    what worries/scares you on holidays
Tell me, tell me if you want,
    what worries/scares you on holidays
Only about him don’t tell me………

Tessekur ederim for the translation Phyllis !!!

Well i think the lyrics are ok but at the same time they are freaky , indeed. That's just Pyx Lax's charm. Maybe that's one of the reasons why i like them so much. Both their music and the lyrics create some smashing specific mix that i love. Sometimes i don't get everything but at least it stimulates my imagination. Thank you again

    Ula mou,

    You ... "requested" ... "this" particular "song" about three months ago ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

Here following is the "link" ...

    And, ... "phyllis" mou ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Your ... "self-confidence" ... ought to be "admired" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

As a "teacher of a foreιgn language" yourself ... it would "seem" that you "encourage" and in fact "manage" to have your ... "intermediate students" ... into being "capable" of "translating" ... "poetry" ... (such as for example W. H. Auden's ...) ... in "Turkish" (... well, let alone a "second" language of theirs ... !!! ...) ... with the "same great ease as you" ... and without inquiring for ANY "further assistance", whatsoever ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Like I said, ... it "ought to be admired" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Ό,τι καλύτερο ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Dear Azim,

I would consider it more like a Quixote-like effort to improve my Greek rather than “self-confidence”..I’d rather have some proof-reading or some feedback afterwards but I don’t feel I have the right to ask such a big favour from anyone, anytime I submit a translation…which leaves me all by myself , as a lonely fighter! And as I know that I won’t be able to go a step further unless I take a little bit of risk, I dare cross the borders and wander around this foreign land of yours!! However, what I would definitely not dare is an attempt to translate a poem neither from Auden nor from Kavafis..I think we both appreciate the distinction between poetry and lyrics…Although I thank you for thinking that my effort is worth admiration, I should also note that what I’m trying to do here is not merely because I’m too daring or too bold.. As I said, I’m only a person who is seeking opportunities to improve herself..And “further assistance” is something I would definitely die for!!

    Pleased to see you again..

Yes Azim, you are so right, indeed, i already asked for this translation !!!

I feel like such a fool now!!! Shame on me !!!

I didn't copy the lyrics with the translation the other time and didn't store them on my hard disc. And yesterday i was just having a look on Pyx Lax's translations that i have got and couldn't see it that's why i asked for it.

But the worst thing is that something wrong is going on with my mind as i didn't even remember i asked for it already. Too much work - i'd say.

But now i have got two great translations so that's the good side of this whole strange situation.

Sorry guys for the mess i did and i promise it won't happen again.

Thanks for the translations - both !!!!!

You're welcome Ula!! Always at your service!! And don't worry about asking for the same song's translation for the second time..We're all human and after all, I am perfectly OK with translating a song that has already been translated as a keen seeker after opportunities!!

I am hoping that "this time", I will be "able" to "post" within this "thread", as it has been not "agreeable" with my "name" ... !!! LOL !!! ...

Honestly, have been "trying" and "trying" to "load" this "page" and it would not let me "in" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Now, ...

    ... "phyllis" mou ...

    Again I am, indeed, quite "surprised" by your "words" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    You see, I would "understand" the "desire" to "learn" another ... "language" ... as a "desire" for ... "communication" ... !!! ... ... ...

    Therefore, the allegory of a "Quixote-like effort", I "find" as a "paradox" to that "desire" ... !!! ... ... ...

    As far as "proof-reading" is concerned ... ... ...

    ... Yes !!! ... Ofcourse !!! ... and in "this" particular "Forum" there are SO many "agreeable beings" for ... "assisting" ... a person in their "particular" ... "endeavour" ... !!! ... ... ...

However, it has been my "experience" so far (I am talking about my "Forum's experience" ... !!!), ... that people who are "aware" of their own ... "limitations" ... as far as "translating" goes, DO "voice" their ... "awareness" ... AND their ... "request" ("RE-QUEST") ... for a "feedback" ... !!! ... ... ...

(... this, first of all, in reference to the person they have "translated" the "song" for ... so as to "let them know" it may have "discrepancies" ... ... ...
... and secondly, to "themselves" and their own "efforts", so as to "get better at it" ... !!! ... ... ...)

As far as, "not feeling you have the right to ask for such a big favour from anyone" ... ... ...

    Well, ... "this" is entirely your own ... "issue" ... ... ...

    ... HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO "SAY" THE FOLLOWING ... ... ... *υ*

Maybe, "try" to "allow" the ... "ANYONE" ... to ... "DECIDE" FOR THEMSELVES, whether they would like to ..."OFFER" ... a "favour" or not ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    (... I DO "believe" and I am FIRMLY "of the idea" that, you would "be pleasantly surprised" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...)

In terms of "being left all by yourself, as a lonely fighter" ... ... ...

... please, "hear" these "words" that I am "offering" to you, "phyllis" mou ... ... ...

    ... The "Greek language" is not about "being left alone" with it ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    ... The "Greek language" is not about "fighting" with it ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    ... The "Greek language" is about "love-making" with it ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

(... as I was "time and time again", ... "trying" to "ensue" to an "adorable" student of mine ... !!! ... ... ... *υ*)

As far as, ... "taking a little bit of risk and daring to cross the borders and wander around ANY foreign land" ... !!! ... ... ...

... "this" I "say" with the "certainty" of my "expertise" BUT (AND), most of all, my own "LIFE'S EXPERIENCE" ... !!! ... ... ... *υ*

... ONE BECOMES FAR MORE "CAPABLE" AND FAR MORE "ABSORBENT" OF AND IN A FOREIGN CULTURE, WHEN ... "IN COMPANY" (ACCOMPANIED) ... BY A/THE "NATIVE SOURCE" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

ESPECIALLY in reference to a "culture" such as IS the "Greek Culture" that, ... "HOSPITABLENESS" (and I do NOT mean "getting into a hospital" !!! LOL !!!), ... is at the VERY HEART of it ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

In reference to "translating poetry" ... ... ...

Again, yes !!! ... unfortunately, a lot of people ... probably the "younger" ones, due to their "disposition" of "being young and knowing it all" (WE ALL "GO" and "WENT" through "that phase" ... some of us "never come out of it" ... !!! LOL !!!), ... do not "realise" or even, ... "try to be aware" ... of the fact that, ...

... "Language" is a "tool of expression" and like every tool, I feel, it takes a "Master" to "appreciate" and "touch" someone else's "work", in order to make an "interpretation"... !!! ... ... ...

    I guess "that" is the ... difference ... of a "translation" and an "interpretation" ... ... ...

    ... the "awareness" of "touching" something that is ... "precious" ... and, ... "respecting" ... the "pricelessness" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

When it comes to "the distinction between poetry and lyrics" ... ... ...

... it is NOT as "clear cut" as how you might "submited" it, "phyllis" mou ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    In fact (!!!), ... MOST of the "songs" (let alone with "Greek lyrics" ... !!! ...), ARE ... "POEMS" ... that are ... "MELODIZED" ... into "songs" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    And yes !!! ... I am fully "aware" of the "globalised" ... "HIT PARADE" ... ... ...

(the "word" ... "hit" ... DOES mean "to strike something or someone deliberately" ... !!! ... ... ...
    and, the "word" ... "parade" ... DOES mean "DISPALYING people or things" ... !!! ... ... ...)

And, ... although there could be an "arguement" about "such" lyrics being "considered" as "poetry" aswell, (I wouldn't "be" one of the "believers", as I "keep" ... "proclaiming" ... !!! LOL !!!), ... ... ...

    ... "LYRICS" ARE "POEMS" PUT TO MUSIC ... !!! ... ... ...

and, ... as Music in general, (I am of the idea that), it is THE Universal language, even more so than Mathematics (as it is something that EVERY SOUL is able to understand and "interpret"), ... ... ...

    ... "LYRICS" ... DO BECOME THE PART THAT, A/THE ... "MIND" ... would also like TO "UNDER-STAND" and "INTERPRET" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    WHICH, ... "brings" US ALL to the VERY REASON of "THIS FORUM" ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    So, ... to "conclude" ... (FINALLY !!! LOL !!!) ... ... ...

    ... this ... "FORUM" ... of "Greek Lyrics Translation" ... is a "place" where we may ... "gather" ... and, "share" ... and "enjoy" ... and "support" ... EACH OTHER AND EACH OTHER'S ENDEAVOURS ... !!! ... *υ* ... !!! ...

    Azimcim...

Once again you're making me feel dizzy with your words and your excellent ( and unique..)way of expressing your thoughts!! Wow, that was quite a reply!

Well..It seems to me you are making ( not intentionally of course! ) a rather misleading impression of me here..People who read your posts above will probably think I'm so self-confident and proud that I refrain from asking for help and feel offended when being corrected!! And what is more, they will feel like, I was reproaching and sort of telling off people around here, in my previous post, for leaving me all alone in my endeavours !! ( hilarious indeed !! ) That's how I felt about myself while reading your comments!! Oh my dear God!! Azim!! What's happening here??? You must have missed my comments attached to some (not all !!) of my translations, reminding and warning that they are not so reliable and may contain mistakes..which in fact is an invitation to all who is willing to correct them! I didn't feel the need to add the same warning to each and every translation, hoping that someone more competent would probably lend a hand if there were any fatal errors...How come do you happen to conclude that I might be "unaware of my limitations" in a foreign language and still unwilling to appreciate the assistance of more competent ones??? I teach a foreign language myself ! But I always encourage my students to speak and write as freely and bravely as they can, without worrying about making mistakes and sounding silly, and never get discouraged by some perfectionist teachers ( could be me myself at times !! ). However I also remind them to continuously check on themselves through various sources, preferably native ones. Because you know, unless you fearlessly dive into this broad sea (of languages), you will never learn to swim!! And of course when you are out of breath and about to drown, I certainly believe the most sensible thing to do is to wave to the coast guard!!

So when it comes to translating lyrics, most of which I assume you consider as sacred as poems..you may be right actually..Sometimes lyrics may go beyond what we should expect from "simply lyrics" and this is something I have observed particularly in greek music..Even the most ( seemingly ) light-hearted pieces, turns out to be talking about such serious and deep issues with such a poetic language. But you might have noticed that I'm trying to be as selective as possible in that, as a person "aware of her limitations"!! Even then, what I end up with is nothing more than a literal tansformation of the words and sentences..Would you consider it a sin?? Sorry, just kidding..I know what you really mean...and I really appreciate that you take the issue of translation, basically of lyrics, so seriously and demand that every single word accompanying such beautiful melodies should deserve a decent, reliable, authentic and almost equally poetic "interpretation"...preferably performed, or at least checked by someone who has the same broad understanding of and equal competency in both languages..But you know what happens? When I myself ask for the translation of some song's lyrics, what I expect to get is not necessarily a "poetic interpretation"..I mean, of course I would be delighted if anyone provided me with an interpretation as such, but most of the time I basically want to know what the song is about..and then I might interpret it and put it into more authentic and poetic words in my head and in my native tongue..I guess this way of thinking might be the motive behind my boldness!!!

So...to sum up, considering my endeavours to learn Greek,
I'm not feeling left alone or anything..
I'm not fighting..I'm quite at peace!
I'm definitely not MAKING LOVE!! But I do LOVE this language!!
And your Greek HOSPITABLENESS is warmly welcomed by my Turkish FRIENDLINESS!! or it could be vice versa..
From now on, my dearest tutor, I will leave a note at the end of my translations, admitting and announcing my incompetency, and ask for assistance!! I promise I'll be a good girl!!
OK I'm leaving the stage!!!! I've taken up so much space!!

    See you around Azimcim..
    All the best
