Solved: Mid '80's Bluesy lovesong: Ray Charles sound -- Please help ID?

Hello to all,

I remember right after my wife and I got married, a song came out that she loved. I was almost positive was Ray Charles singing, but remember being really surprised in hearing a DJ say who it was and it was NOT Ray.

3/4 time, Song about trying to salvage a love, only lyrics I'm sure about is the hook/first part of the Chorus:

"Tell me why we have to hold on, with tears in our eyes,
Hold on, and not say goodbye, ..."

Not much to go on, I know, but I've told you everything I know. Someone really knowledgeable on 80's love songs/R&B may be able to recall, and I will be forever grateful...
