Aşık Mahzuni Şerif - Domdom kurşunu
note:
domdom bullet is a type of bullet used to hunt wild boars. the word derives from the city dumdum in india (the tdk dictionary), but, i guess, is influenced by the sound of the rifle.
it's related that the song was about an incident that took place in kahramanmaraş in which a young leftist was shot dead in the forehead by a domdom bullet. ferhan şensoy critisizes those who belly-dance with the song as "a young man was shot in kahramanmaraş just because he was leftist and mahzuni sang the domdom kurşunu. he didn't sing it in order for you to stamp your feet in discos."

Listen to the minstrel (streaming audio)
Domdom kurşunu
domdom bullet
kaşların arasından domdom kurşunu değdi (*)
a domdom bullet touched between the eyebrows (literally, from between. a local expression)
bir avcı vurdu beni bin avcı beni yedi (the minstrel pronounces as avcu)
a hunter shot me, a thousand hunters ate me
(refrain)
ah dedim ağladım yaremi bağladım (yare: poetic yara)
i said "ah," i cried, i bound up my wound
eğdi yar boynun eğdi mevlam/allah kerimsin dedi (**)
he bowed his head (in sorrow), ah, he said "nothing to be done"
hançer yarası değil domdom kurşunu değdi
it's not a dagger wound, a domdom bullet touched
gel gel gümle gel
gel gel gümle gel
come, come banging
gel böğrüme domdom kurşunu
come to my flank, domdom bullet
bugünüm harap oldu dünden iyi midir ki
my today was ruined, is it even better than yesterday?
doktor hasta ben hasta benden iyi midir ki
the doctor is sick, i'm sick, is he even better than me?
(refrain)
mahzuni yar benim halimi anlasaydı
mahzuni, what if the sweetheart sympathized with me
bütün dertliler gibi inleyip dinleseydi
what if she moaned and listened like all the sorrowful
(refrain)

(*) kaşların: it might also be kaşlarının, his eyebrows (with the genitive suffix dropped).
(**) here yar doesn't mean sweetheart or beloved," it's just a word for expressing sorrow. allah kerim literally means "god is gracious," and allah kerimsin, "god, you're gracious." it expresses that "there's nothing left to be done by me/us, everythig is in the hands of god now." mevla, meaning lord or master in arabic, is also used to address god.
