Toi et ton cœur invulnérable
Toi et ta foutue vérité
Mille vies ne sont pas suffisantes
Mille hommes ne sont pas assez forts
Ne viens pas savonner la pente
Ne viens pas compliquer mon sort
Mille vies ne sont pas suffisantes
Mille hommes ne sont pas assez forts
Reviens si je suis à ma lampe
Ne reviens pas si je m'endors...

Please, translate into English - 1000 vies, Stephan Eicher

A thousand lives
Will I have the lie in the mouth
The right hand on the heart?
Will I be clothed under the shower
Completely drunk or frozen with fear?
Will I be dying
With a perfect (female) stranger
Will I be sitting alone at my table
In the twilight, half naked?
Will I be able to look into your face
And tell you: "I did what I could"
If I could only break the ice
And touch your cheek, without shame?
Will I be mature enough to ask for grace
Will I have swallowed my pride
Or will I be suffocated by it instead
Who can know what one reaps?
A thousand lives are not enough
A thousand men are not strong enough
Don't go soap the slope
Don't go make my fate more difficult
A thousand lives are not enough
A thousand men are not strong enough
Come back if I am at my lamp
Don't come back if I am making myself sleep
Will I have a friend at my table
Or someone you don't like
Will I be guilty once more
Of weakness or I don't know what?
Will I be in my bed like an angle
ruminating bad thoughts
Or pressing the skin of an orange
Before my eyes to enlighten myself
Will I have the right to your benevolence
Or will you send me to the ground
The more I think about this, the more I think
That I have not understood the lesson
How could I seduce your soul
Have you thought about it before?
You and your invulnerable heart
You and you damned truth
A thousand lives are not enough
A thousand men are not strong enough
Don't go soap the slope
Don't go make my fate more difficult
A thousand lives are not enough
A thousand men are not strong enough
Come back if I am at my lamp
Don't come back if I am making myself sleep

"Soap the slope" is probably a saying meaning "making something harder deliberately / making someone fall" or something like that. I don't know what "if I am at my lamp" means. Perhaps it means hanging yourself (from the lamp) but I really have no idea. Also, I'm not completely sure (but pretty confident) about the tenses.Last edited by Albruna; 08-26-2008 at 04:54 PM. Reviens si je suis à ma lampe
Ne reviens pas si je m'endors...
=> When he says " si je suis à ma lampe" he means if there still burns a light which shows he's not sleeping she should come back, but not if he is falling asleep "pas si je m'endors". It's not a common expression to say this, it's the lyricist who found this line to express himself.
For "savonner la pente" it means to make it harder but isn't a common expression either (or not one I know XD) -
aah, of course. Yes, either the lamp is on or he has already gone to sleep, these are the two possibilities. It sounds so much more logical than the version where he hangs himself... I've been watching too much Buffy lately XD
-
LOL!! It's not such a depressive song XD Buffy , I LOVe Buffy =D
A few suggestions about the rest of yoru translation:
Et toucher ta joue, honte bue ?
And touch your cheek, clouded with shame?
=> & touch your cheek, without shame. "honte bue" means he doesn't have to be ashamed to touch her cheek, he overcame his emberassement. Just like he had drunk it (don't know if this expression is used in english)
Autrefois, y as-tu songé ... ?
Earlier, here you have dreamt..?
=> Have you thought about it before...?
The verb "songer" has nothing to do with dreaming, it's taking a glance on a possibility (I think it's the right expression you use, it's thinking about something but as maybe, perhaps, not when you sure )
Toi et ta foutue vérité
You and you broken truth
=> You and your damned truth . -
Yep, I've found the whole series online ^^
Thanks for your suggestions, I'll edit my translation. -
