No, it's not.Greeks (and Bulgarians) use it pretty often, that's true, however "bravo" comes from Italian, lit. "brave, bold". As a cheer, "well done!," dates from the 18th century. Superlative form is bravissimo.

Both words are common in everyday use in Greece as well (the first one being replaced by "bye" or "aide bye", while Bulgarians say "aide ciao").
Well, we should remember that French was lingua franca till the 20th century, and especially of Europe's higher classes and diplomacy. It became widely used during the Bulgarian National Revival or the Bulgarian Renaissance.
Besides, "merci" is shorter. :P It's informal, though.
