No, it's not. Greeks (and Bulgarians) use it pretty often, that's true, however "bravo" comes from Italian, lit. "brave, bold". As a cheer, "well done!," dates from the 18th century. Superlative form is bravissimo.

NyLoN_BoY, no originally Greek word starts with МП.

Neither. "Ciao" is Italian and "aide" is a borrowing from Turkish.
Both words are common in everyday use in Greece as well (the first one being replaced by "bye" or "aide bye", while Bulgarians say "aide ciao").

Well, we should remember that French was lingua franca till the 20th century, and especially of Europe's higher classes and diplomacy. It became widely used during the Bulgarian National Revival or the Bulgarian Renaissance.
Besides, "merci" is shorter. :P It's informal, though.

I didn't mean what I wrote I know that chao comes from italian ciao, come on, I mean that every slavonic language took it, doesn't matter where it is placed, in the south, east or west :P

But you have to admit that ку*ва и х*й are slavonic words haha

Well, Greek is certainly not a Slavic language. People seem to have affection for short words.

Actually, there is no "chao", it is simply a crooked "ciao".

I don't have to admit anything of the kind.

P.S. Alright, seriously now. "Ky*ва" really is a panslavic word, it exists in (almost) all Slavic languages. The language it originates from is Old Bulgarian, though.
Here we go: In Old Bulgarian (and even some modern dialects) КОУРЪ means "rooster, сосk". /Bulg. кур; Ukr. кур; Slovene kùr, gen. kúra; Czech kour, kur; Slovak kúr, Pol. kur = rooster, сосk/.
The word is a reflex of the IE root *kaur-, that occurs in the (rare) Latin caurio, and the Lithuanian kurti, kauriu, which means "to scream, yell, shout".
In Middle Bulgarian the semantic development led to the result rooster, сосk => membrum virile. As of today, in Bulgarian к*р is vulgar for "pe*is" (cf. Fr. coq -> En. сосk). "Rooster" is "петел".

"Ку*ва" comes from *КОУРЫ, КОУРЪВЕ with the suffix *-ъв- for the feminine correspondence (as in СВЕКРЫ, СВЕКРЪВЕ). Perhaps initially the word meant "hen", but with the changing of the meaning of КОУРЪ, its meaning changed as well.

That's what I'm talking about. In Russian "hen" is "kuritsa".

These 'offensive' words had once meant something else, that is "rooster" and "hen". Funny, isn't it?

Not a bit of it. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, Wilde, Byron, Carroll, Kipling, Waugh, Golding, Milne, Durrell, Lewis, Tolkien, Pratchett...
History, art, culture, language... What's not to love about England?

    P.S. And Paul Bettany

In fact, almost all of my favourite writers, actors and musicians are British. Even my signature is a quote from an English book. A very English one, I'd say.

although i'm not someone who hates my own country like lady diamond, it might be worth pointing out that "traditional" england, the country that produced the bulk of those writers, and the majority of our classical literature, doesn't exist any more

i notice that an awful lot of eastern bloc anglophiles have very, very romantic notions of england, generally ones that are 50 years too late to be reality.

Of course it does. We have The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, don't we?

I wouldn't call Sir Terrence Pratchett romantic. And what about China Miéville? Neil Gaiman? Philip Pullman? Susanna Clarke? Joe Abercrombie?

Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan, V. S. Naipaul?

    Come on...

by "romantic notions of the country" i was referring to the actual country itself, and how people live their lives, not modern fantasy literature. red telephone boxes, black cabs, bowler hats, afternoon tea and all that ****, it doesn't exist anymore.
