thanks a lot, great job !!
No need to thank dear This dialect is spoken in Egypt , in Lebanon and Syria they speak the Shami dialect they also call it Levantine Arabic. But they understand egyptian too, thanks to egyptian music and television .
have a nice day
@czarek and najla... thanks a lot for the additional information...
but i have a question... the last sentence : Tawel baalek, meaning, be patience..., when would you say this to someone ?
and why did i learn that the word patience would be in arabic "sabr" ?
could you please translate me this sentence word by words, please ?
the meaning of tawel ? and the meaning of baalek ?
thanks a lot...
You are welcome anytime.
Well you can use it in many ways.
ex:
Why are you in a hurry!طول بالك=Tawwel baalak-Be patience!!!
*Tawwel as a verb means"to lenghten ",make longer").
*Baal=mind
So literaly this sentence ,means "lenghten your mind"
There is also another expression used in Syrian Dialect "دير بالك=deer baalak=Watch out!!
Be carefull!
صبر=Sabr =has two meanings
a)patience as you said and it is used in Modern Standard Arabic(أصبر قليلاً)=oSbor(qaleelan) !!!=Be patience( a little)!!!
b)cactus/(pricky pear)
In Egyptian dialect you can say:أصبر كمان شوية =Osbor kamaan shwayya=Be patience a little longer !!!
Hope it will help a bit!!
@czarek : thank you very much.... now i got a real better idea of when to use it
if you would like and find the time... you could write me some of the most common syrian arabic expressions ?
like thank you, you are welcome, how are you ? and whatever you may know
that would be great
thanks in advance
