This thread is to comment upon, raise questions about, and to discuss ATL poetry and poetry in general. If you have read an outstanding original poem on ATL, you may also share the title, author, and a link to the poem. (Of course, discussion of original ATL poems should be written on the author's poem thread--not here.)

Discussions on the Poetry - General thread, can be serious or relaxed and fun without going off topic. Appreciation to/about top-notch ATL authors (of poems and lyrics) can be given here; share what you like about that particular writer. Anything that is about poetry at ATL or in general is fair game. Posting of actual poems should be done elsewhere, on an appropriate thread-- although a brief quote may be shared to make a point or share for discussion.

Please apply all the ATL rules, especially regarding respect, decorum, and good manners. Use language that would be socially appropriate in the presence of children and people whom you highly esteem (e.g., no cursing, please).

Frankie's "share" tonight: I am absolutely amazed at the degree of talent in the Poetry Section (as well as the ATL members' Lyrics Section). Never have I been on a site where there was such an abundance of poetic talent. Poem topics, execution of stanzas, use of the English language, and particularly poem meanings are fresh and excellent. "Style" is not to be left out. Oh my! what style!!! Somewhere, always something different . . . unexpected.

Sometimes we may think, "It's all been said before." That is probably true. Yet some new poems/lyrics are unique--I personally have not read anything quite like them before. Poems which definitely are repeat (some would say "often used" or even "worn") topics, are presented in such an individual manner, that I am still pleased or even impressed!

To the poets and lyrics writers of ATL: Congratulations! You are doing a great job. Please don't give up . . . You are appreciated.

The same could be said of music: composing something "totally new" seems an impossible dream - and yet new songs, compositions arrive daily!
The fatal approach is the one we just have to reject by all means. You are right. Just keep writing.

Another fatal approach is to think: "oh,well, that or that sounds much better than mine, they don't need me"

For me this Poetry thread has been a revelation: amongst us hide many surprises

Amaryn, thank you. The three points you made are indeed ones fatal to creativity and the courage to share it. May all hesitant writers consider these three creative "buzz-killers" and find the courage to share their talents, because "amongst us hides many surprises"! Well said, amaryn!

My first "share" is Doug Denslowe's poem, "Midnight Sun." Why? Because I understand it in a "been there many times" way. The title is perfect. It's also good poetry:

Zaknythos' lyrics, "Better Days." These lyrics flow so beautifully. Don't mean to 'beat a dead horse,' but Zak and some others are writing in English, not their first language! Yet, how well they do! This is a very good example:

DeShaun has an unusual sense of humor in his songs. "Idiot Thief" stands out to me as very different--I've never forgotten it. DeShaun has a YourListen link for the song on his thread. His lyrics are pictoral and funny; but somehow his intelligence shines through! His style is what I call deep south rickety-blues/folk. However, today I heard a song/group on the radio, "Down Home Girl," by Old Crow Medicine Show; this song/group seemed close to DeShaun's style. [Old Crow Medicine Show is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Their music has been called old-time, bluegrass, folk, and alt-country.]

Frankie Thank You So Much for doing this topic, and i'm sorry that you had to chase me down to get me here but I/we have been kinda busy this week on another website, well that and also waiting patiently for my baby to recover from a slight case of pneumonia but he's lots better and everything is great now

You've made some really great selections for this topic! and YES i am very proud to be part of it too and thank you so much for that too. I still get those same old good feelings reading Cosmic Kiss and that's still one of my biggest favorite works.

Also glad you pulled that one up by Zakynthos bcs i love the smooth sense of that one as much as anything that i've read in these pages....

Now, for something completely different . . . go on a journey into the sea on a white boat with our friend from Jordan. dark1979 says he struggles with the English language. However, in his poem, you will be transported to new places which he sees and feels; also to old places which he does not like; then back again to the comforting sea. dark1979's style and language is simple and powerful . . . go with him . . . to the depths . . .
