    Default Lontano (Nomadi)

Hello, I have tried, but I can't make sense of my own translation of this. It seems to be a collection of short thoughts, but I can't connect them.

    Thank you for your translation:

Lontano, piano il tempo, pensieri a metà*
    sul soffitto macchie d'umidità,*
nelle tasche le briciole della realtà.*
Lontano, quando è tardi e si chiudono i bar*
dentro un'auto fra fumo e ansietà*
    o davanti ad un portone.*
    E lontano,*
    respirando l'odore che da*
    una nuova o qualunque città*
regalandoti al primo che ti chiamerà.*
    E lontano,*
    naturale follia.*
    Lontano,*
    dentro a case di malinconia*
con la noia che fuori è follia*
    solo per la tua strada.*
Lontano, occhi al buio che guardano giù*
appoggiarsi ad un muro per star sù*
    e abbracciare la notte.*
    E lontano,*
    cuore gonfio di curiosità*
    affacciati su quel che sarà*
    vedere partire l'ultimo tram.*
    E lontano, ma quando*
    senza alcuna ragione, un perchè*
    ritrovarsi a cantare alle tre,*
    una canzone d'amore per te

Hope this will help you, but they probably really are a collection of unconnected short thoughts!

Lontano, piano il tempo, pensieri a metà*/away, slow time, half-thoughts
sul soffitto macchie d'umidità,*/ damp stains on the ceiling
nelle tasche le briciole della realtà.*/ in my pocket grains of reality
Lontano, quando è tardi e si chiudono i bar*/ away, when it's late and the bars close
dentro un'auto fra fumo e ansietà*/ in a car amidst smoke and anxiety
o davanti ad un portone.*/ or before a main door
    E lontano,*/ and far away
respirando l'odore che da*/ breathing the smell
una nuova o qualunque città*/ of a new city or of any city
regalandoti al primo che ti chiamerà.*/ offering yourself to the first that will call you
    E lontano,*/ and far away
mille miglia, due passi da me*/ a thousand miles, two steps from me
non vedere l'azzurro che c'è*/ not being able to see the blue
non cercare più niente.*/ do not seek anything anymore
Dentro il futuro*/ into the future,
sospinti da venti del nord*/ driven by northern winds
tra forze selvagge*/ amidst wild powers
che le chiamano e le portano con sè*/ that summon them and then take them away
tra stelle cadenti*/ amidst shooting stars
speranze che volano via*/ hopes that fly away
nei ricordi sbiaditi di un domani*/ into pale memories of a tomorrow
    naturale follia.*/ natural insanity
    Lontano,*/ far away
dentro a case di malinconia*/ inside house of melancholy
con la noia che fuori è follia*/ with the tedium that outside is madness
solo per la tua strada.*/ all alone on your street
Lontano, occhi al buio che guardano giù*/ away, eyes in the darkness looking down
appoggiarsi ad un muro per star sù*/ lean against the wall to stay on your feet
e abbracciare la notte.*/ and embrace the night
    E lontano,*/ and far away
cuore gonfio di curiosità*/ heart full of curiosity
affacciati su quel che sarà*/ look out on the future
vedere partire l'ultimo tram.*/ seeing the last tram leaving
E lontano, ma quando*/ and far away, but when,
senza alcuna ragione, un perchè*/ without a reason why,
    ritrovarsi a cantare alle tre,*/ I find myself singing at 3 o'clock
una canzone d'amore per te/ a love song for you
"-Please tell me you're going to appeal to my humanity..."
"-Actually, I'm planning to threaten you."

"Well, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do. Evil plots don't just make themselves, you know!"

    Default Thank you!

I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond to this. I love your translations. I had most of the words, but that is all they were. There was no poetry. You have a real talent for putting those same words together in a beautiful way while still keeping the literal translation of the words.

An example is "heart full of curiosity looking out on the future and seeing the last tram leaving". To me, that is a very visual example of hopelessness and despair. I don't know if that is what was meant by the author, but that is my interpretation of your translation. I see that "last tram leaving" saying that although this person's heart wasn't dead (it was full of curiosity), and there was some hope for the future, the "last tram leaving" was leaving without her/him.

There is also someone who loves this person. Someone who can't forget the subject, and who sings love songs to him/her. And yet, it is hard to tell who is more alone, the singer or the subject.

Thank you again. I do appreciate your help, and I am learning a lot from you about trying to do more than just translate words, but to also translate thoughts and emotions.

(And thank you, too to Nomadi for the music...the song starts at 0:45)

That is a lovely bitter-sweet song, I really like it!
Thanks very much for your compliments, you're very kind!
Well, you surely understand the deep and emotional meaning of Nomadi's songs, as I always try to do with Pearl Jam's songs!
"-Please tell me you're going to appeal to my humanity..."
"-Actually, I'm planning to threaten you."

"Well, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do. Evil plots don't just make themselves, you know!"

I like Pearl Jam's music...but I do better translating Italian than Pearl Jam. What language ARE they speaking anyway?
